Hello chriske47 There are names and locations of pubs marked on the 1851 map of Merthyr ,they are not very clear to read and probably not all are marked . There were public houses and also beerhouses ,what exactly the differance was i don't know. On the map there are 5 PUBLIC HOUSES marked THE RED LION THE BEEHIVE THE LAMB INN THE CASTLE HOUSE ? ( i think ) not very clear to read THE ?? ? unable to read THE CASTLE HOUSE (? ) is the nearest to where no29 CASTLE STREET would have been i would say. THE CASTLE HOTEL was at the other end of the street and is marked as such. no street numbers are marked. The names of the pubs might have changed later. The licence records for pubs should be held at GLAMORGAN ARCHIVES in CARDIFF they might be more helpful !!. mike

Hello henfelinwynt According to the photo the shop is B. HARRIS-JONES womans clothes shop. In the electoral books B. HARRIS-JONES was located at number 17 Castle Street. On a street map of 1876 the Red LION is shown four buildings along from The LAMB Inn ,If the shop photo was two turned into one it would still be one out, the Lamb Inn was on the corner so was a large building but only one . I think you might be unlucky by one property sorry!. But i might be wrong.

ginlynne You can look at the electoral registers in the Central LIBRARY IN MERTHYR TYDFIL in book form or on reels of film. There should be copies also in GLAMORGAN RECORDS OFFICE in CARDIFF , THE BRITISH LIBRARY IN LONDON and THE NATIONAL LIBRARY OF WALES IN ABERYSTWYTH. They are not on the web and there is not a set for all years some have been lost . Pre 1918 only men over 21 are listed who owned some property from 1918 on Women over the age of 30 are also listed .

Claire I had a quick look only, that was the only inquest for a Michael Donovan i could see. in the Merthyr Express around the time of accident, there were two men with the same name registered in the same quarter of 1904 in merthyr according to FREE BMD. If there was no report in the Express not all deaths are prehaps it might be in THE WESTERN MAIL or THE SOUTH WALES ECHO. You don't have to make an appointment at the library to look at papers in Merthyr don't know about other libraries. Merthyr library does not have copies of WESTERN MAIL OR ECHO for those years Cardiff library should or Glamorgan Archives.

Hello ginlynne It should say on the marriage certificate a home address and on a birth certificate . You could also look in local papers to see if any reports of Births Marriage or Deaths these could give you names and addresses.

hello claire. There is an inquest report in the Merthyr Express . It is on page 11 Nov 26th 1904. It says he died on Monday week , collapsed on pile of rubbish while working . Cause of death Failure of . Heart . It also says as earlier reported but i could not see earlier report in paper . The quality of the reels of film are not that good though and there were eastern and western valley editions so might be in other valley edition . Ask merthyr library or Tredegar library.

hello jaz . On the 1851 census for Merthyr there is a TYDFIL STREET and a TYDFIL STREET ( UNDER) .The first building listed is The 3 Cups Inn . On later lists this Inn is listed as on Brecon Road . I think i have seen maps where early on part of Brecon Road, the lower end was called Tydfil Street ?. The streets on 1851 census preceeding Tydfil Street are Brecon Road and after Caepantywyll . I am fairly sure that at one time Brecon Road was also called Tydfil Well Street on early maps ,prehaps that was why the Post Office that was on Brecon Road was called Tydfil Well Post Office.
