Hello Mary On the copies of the baptism records for ST ILLTYD'S DOWLAIS it does call it CATHOLIC CHAPEL, but not on ST MARY'S records. I do not know if there are any photos of The Three Cups on Brecon Rd sorry, it could have been turned into a house or knocked down there is a list of PUBS on this website but it has no photo on it. PATRICK'S family might have moved away from Merthyr at the time he was born looking for work? then moved back later. They might not have had the money to baptism him . He could have been in the WORKHOUSE because he was ill and needed treatment that was the only medical help ordinary people could get unless they paid for it privately. There are some records for the WORKHOUSE they are kept in THE GLAMORGAN ARCHIVES in CARDIFF. You might have trouble having access to them though as they might have a 100 year restriction on them due to data protection etc ?. MERTHYR CENTRAL LIBRARY does have some school records but not all. GLAMORGAN ARCHIVES IN CARDIFF could have more but again they might not let you see the records (data protection). MERTHYR CENTRAL LIBRARY is located on THE HIGH STREET MERTHYR TYDFIL under about a 1/4 mile from both bus and railway station, if going to drive the roads are a bit of a mess at the moment. No parking at the library ,though multi storey car park near bye.

Hiya Mary, St. Tydfil's Church is not Roman Catholic it's Anglican. The Catholic churches are 'St. Mary's Our Lady of the Rosary'in Merthyr Tydfil and 'St. Illtyd's' in Dowlais situated off Balaclava Road, close to the area called the Bont. The Merthyr Guardians managed Health and Welfare of the poor in the parish, they were made up from business people, professional people and dignitaries of the town. Tydfil Lodge and the Three Cups were seperate places the Tydfil Lodge was part of the Union Workhouse/Infirmary, the Three Cups was a public house on the Brecon Road. Possibly they resided in the Three Cups and died in Tydfil's Lodge. For more information of Catholic Church Baptisms, Marriages and Deaths of Merthyr and Dowlais, contact Merthyr Central Library. library.services@merthyr.gov.uk or the local registrar of births, deaths and marriages, or the Bereavement Service at the Civic Centre, Merthyr Tydfil. No problem jules He would have been called up for service anyway if he did not have a reserved occupation from 1916 onward, and especially as he had been in the army previous even for only a short time. His parents were still living at 15 CORPORATION STREET up until 1935.

Hello evantimo There is a marriage record for a CHARLES FRANCIS to ESTHER WATKINS registered at MERTHYR TYDFIL MARCH QTR 1857.I don't want to sound negative and put you off trying to find them but you have to remember that the registration district covered a large area not only MERTHYR and its valley but also the ABERDARE VALLEY and parts of the RHYMNEY VALLEY ,they may have been living and married anywhere in the district, CEFN COED and VAYNOR are 1 to 2 miles away from MERTHYR they were in BRECONSHIRE but as it was closer and easier to go to MERTHYR most/many if not all BIRTHS, DEATHS, MARRIAGES could have been registered at MERTHYR. You say your great grandmother was born in DOWLAIS there is a ELIZABETH ANN FRANCIES registered MERTHYR DECEMBER QTR 1862, her mother might have gone to have her baby with a relative mother/sister maybe .You will have to send for the certificates to see where the address's are given. I hope this helps you a little and you find them!
