If anyone has any information I would be grateful.
William Young, b 1851 (unknown location) died 1885, married Mary Ann O'Connor b 1864 (Dowlais) marriage took place 1877 Dowlais. To my knowledge they had one child John Arthur Young born 1884 Dowlais; my great grandfather. Mary Ann remarried to Thomas Doolan 1894 again in Dowlais, to my knowledge there was one child to the marriage, Ellen born 1896, Dowlais. The 1901 census is the last information I can find about William, Mary Ann, Ellen and Thomas, if anyone has any knowledge or information about this family I would be grateful as I have hit a road block!!!!
Many thanks in advance

Hello wheezyanna I had a look at the records in MERTHYR LIBRARY there are some records in the catholic books that look to be your relatives. There are five children baptised with parents WILLIAM YOUNG and MARY ANN CONNOR /O'CONNOR. ELLEN YOUNG BORN 12JULY 1878 BAPTISED 14JULY 1878 JAMES YOUNG BORN 14JUNE 1880 BAPT 27 JUNE 1880 JOHN YOUNG BORN 31 OCT 1884 BAPT 7 NOV 1884 MARGARET ELLEN YOUNG BORN 15 FEB 1882 BAPT 19 FEB 1882 MARY ANN YOUNG BORN 2 OCT 1883 BAPT 4 OCT 1883 There are deaths for the following ELLEN YOUNG DIED 6 FEB 1882 AGE 3 ELLEN YOUNG DIED 11 DEC 1883 AGE 2 MONTHS JAMES YOUNG DIED 13 DEC 1882 AGE 2 WILLIAM YOUNG DIED 4 FEB 1885 AGE 34 ELLEN YOUNG DIED 17 FEB 1885 AGE 80 All deaths above give ADDRESS AS either no 8 or no 12 LEWIS STREET DOWLAIS On JOHN YOUNG'S BAPTISM record it adds he married a LILLIAN T DAVIES on 24 FEB 1913 in GRAVESEND. These could be the family you are looking for if not apologies sending false hope.

Omg mike you bloody Star!!!!!!
My John young did indeed marry Lilian Davies in Gravesend Kent, my birth place.......
Interestingly this makes me believe that William was using a different name on the 1881 census as you have named the children that are on the census with him!!!!!
John's history was a mystery to most in the family so I can never thank you for this break through!!
Best wishes
Claire

Hello Claire Glad I could help. The names I gave were not from the census they were from the Catholic records that are kept in the library, they also give Godparents names as well, these were sometimes brothers or sister or cousins or just friends. If you contact MERTHYR LIBRARY they could send you copies of them, they are written in LATIN . I had a quick look at the 1881 census and living in 11/12 LEWIS STREET DOWLAIS were JOHN YOUNG and MARY ANN YOUNG he was aged 27 she was 18 he says born in CORK IRELAND could be either the town or county, she was born DOWLAIS, his occupation INNKEEPER . There are 2 children Ellen AGE 2 and JAMES AGED UNDER 1 YEAR .There is also a MARY ELLEN CASEY age 11 it says NURSE but I THINK IT SHOULD BE NIECE .Hope this helps a little more!
All the best MIKE

Hi Mike,
The 1881 census is the one I mean about the names matching up! The differences for me are-
William not mentioned but John is age is 27 on the census but William should be 31 Mary Ann is listed as 18 but going by year I believe she was born- 1864 she would have been just 13 at marriage in 1877, making her 14 at Ellen's birth in 1878 and 16 in 1880 when James was born, finally she would have been 17(or almost 17 dependant on month of birth) on the census.
This leaves me thinking that they were trying to hide/ smokescreen the facts somewhat by a) changing his name b) lowering his age c) increasing her age
After he died in 1885, I next find Mary Ann on 1901 census aged 37 which is her correct age at that point now married with the surname Doolan and another child Ellen aged 5 (another Ellen!!!)
Thanks for all your help with this it is greatly appreciated Wales is not 'just down the road' for me here in Wiltshire.
Many many thanks
Best wishes
Claire

Claire
Upstairs in the library they have a room for family history, there are small blue books which have indexes to some of the records they hold. These were compiled by the GLAMORGAN FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY, they are also translated from latin into ENGLISH and are in alphabetical order of surnames. If you look at these first it is easier to find the latin copies they have in the big books. RED BOOKS FOR MARRIAGES GREEN BOOKS FOR BAPTISMS BLACK BOOKS FOR DEATHS
Hope you have a successful trip. MIKE

Hi Claire, This is a very old thread, so not sure if you’ll even get this. You also may already have this info by now, but here it is either way. My 2x great grandmother was Bridget Connors. She was Mary Ann’s sister. They also had a brother William. From what I have found they were all there on Lewis street. William wound up in Ohio. Bridget married James Hourihan, moved briefly to Dunmanway in Cork where he was from, then on to Boston. Their parents were John Connors (or O’Connor) and Margaret Anglan, both originally from Cahir, Tipperary. Hopefully this helps and feel free to correct me if you’ve found anything different. Your distant cousin, Patrick
