Hello aglabourer1 There is a army pension record for a JENKIN HYMM born in MERTHYR TYDFIL born 1775 discharged from army in 1818 .Served in 47th/81st foot. His age 43 this might be the father of your JENKIN HYMM . These records can be found on FIND MY PAST. If it is the son might be recorded in army births etc. There is a death of a JENKIN HYM AGE 70 Registered in DECEMBER QTR 1885 FOR MERTHYR TYDFIL, and a birth of JENKIN DAVID HYM DECEMBER QTR 1879 AT MERTHYR, maybe the family?

Hello Claire Glad I could help. The names I gave were not from the census they were from the Catholic records that are kept in the library, they also give Godparents names as well, these were sometimes brothers or sister or cousins or just friends. If you contact MERTHYR LIBRARY they could send you copies of them, they are written in LATIN . I had a quick look at the 1881 census and living in 11/12 LEWIS STREET DOWLAIS were JOHN YOUNG and MARY ANN YOUNG he was aged 27 she was 18 he says born in CORK IRELAND could be either the town or county, she was born DOWLAIS, his occupation INNKEEPER . There are 2 children Ellen AGE 2 and JAMES AGED UNDER 1 YEAR .There is also a MARY ELLEN CASEY age 11 it says NURSE but I THINK IT SHOULD BE NIECE .Hope this helps a little more!
All the best MIKE

Hello gog Heolwermood was one of the 4 OR 5 hamlets the district of MERTHYR TYDFIL and DOWLAIS was divided into .There was GARTH, HEOLWERMOD, GELLIDEG, FOREST, TAFF and CYNON. HEOLWERMMOD covered the area from DOWLAIS down to PENTREBACH on the eastern side of the river TAFF. This area was large covering all DOWLAIS, PENYDARREN ,MERTHYR TOWN, THOMASTOWN, CAEDRAW, roughly down to the PLYMOUTH IRON WORKS. In modern day terms it would be the same areas. As for the street SCHOOLROOM-ROW I think it was in the CEFN COED / VAYNOR area which was up until about 1973/4 part of BRECONSHIRE.

Looking at this page again ,if ALLISON had not been informed there are lists of school children who went to ST ILLTYDS SCHOOL GIRLS DEPT from 1st MARCH 1904 to 28th AUGUST 1924 .These lists were compiled by GLAMORGAN FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY. They were available to buy and see but might not be now as there have been cases of identity theft etc GLAMORGAN RECORDS OFFICE/ARCHIVE will not let people see the school records until 100years have past. IF you contact GLAMORGAN FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY they could tell you more.

There was a Tramroad Company in Merthyr Tydfil which took over the responsibility for the operation and mantainance of the Merthyr Tramway ( often known as the Penydarren Tramway ) This Tramroad started in the Dowlais Works and ran by the Penydarren Ironworks and behind the High Street, through Pentrebach and all the way to Abercynon This is the tramroad used by Richard Trevithick on his historic journey in 1804. There are no known records of this Company, which was probably taken over by the Merthyr Tydfil Electric Traction Company Limited at the end of the nineteenth century. Try The Glamorgan Archives just in case but there may only be passing references to this Company and nothing in detail.

BETHESDA STREET was in UPPER MERTHYR DISTRICT PART OF CYFARTHFA WARD HAMLET OF GARTH it was right next to the area known as CHINA you entered into CHINA from one or two archways off BETHESDA STREET. Earlier on it was called JACKSON BRIDGE STREET / JACKSON STREET. HILL STREET was in the area called CAEPANTYWYLL it was situated below BRECON ROAD along side the RIVER TAFF .There were I think 4 ways down to CAEPANTYWYLL from BRECON ROAD one of them I think was HILL STREET . It was in the same district ward and hamlet as BETHESDA about 1/4 - 1/2 mile between them .

He could have transferred after recovering from wounds .records says entitled to 3 medals THE 1915 STAR . THE WAR MEDAL THE VICTORY MEDAL .Entered war theatre on 17/5/1915. Can not say 100% it is him but very good chance.

Hello taffydog You say you have all the certificates you can find . Have you got just the registrar certificates or do you have church certificates as well ? If you don't have church certs there are photocopies of originals in MERTHYR TYDFIL CENTRAL LIBRARY baptism's/marriages and death's. you could get in touch with them and they could send you copies ,remember though that church records recorded the name's in LATIN years ago and also the Priest might have not spelt the SURNAME the way you do eg DWIRE or DEWIRE etc .

Hello windy I could only see three OWEN SMITH'S who died in WW2 according to a war graves web site it does look very unlikely ,This was army only though. Do you have any street addresses for MERTHYR .The nearest soldier to MERTHYR TYDFIL was a CORP0RAL OWEN SMITH served in OX AND BUCKS LIGHT INFANTRY DIED 24TH MARCH 1945 ARMY NUMBER 5250508 born in HEREFORD . In book of WILLS AND PROBATE FOR ENGLAND & WALES on ancestry.com .there is an OWEN FRANK SMITH DIED 24TH MARCH 1945 ON WAR SERVICE lived at THE CREWS UPPTON BISHOP NEAR ROSS ON WYE . Left money to a FRANK JAMES SMITH ? ( FARM LABOURER ). could this be the man it might be worth looking at . Hope this is not sending you in wrong direction.
