Hi, my name is Julie Cotterill and I am a descendant of all of the above named surnames. I don't live in Merthyr I live in Birmingham but I am very proud of my Welsh heritage
I was wondering if there is anyone out there with the same surnames as in the subject title.
Just a quick potted history.
My mum is called Patricia Cotterill nee McCarthy, her dad was called Phillip McCarthy and he was born on 1st May 1916, her mum was called Norah McCarthy nee Horgan and she was born on 19th April 1918, they both came from Merthyr Tydfil but I think my grandad was more Dowlais.
So I am looking for McCarthys and I think they lived in Brynyfryd Street at about this time, I am doing my family tree and have quite a lot of info. Then on my grandad's side his mum had the surname Rowe, she died in childbirth giving birth to my grandad. My grandad died in 1977 when people weren't so into family history and so we never got the chance to talk to him about his early life, I was only four when he died and mum was only 30 but to her knowledge he was brought up by his grandparents, now we don't know whether that was the Rowe side or the McCarthy side and this is something we are so desperate to know, so if anyone has any info on this it would be spectacular.
My great grandad was called William Benedict McCarthy and to my knowledge all of the above went to St Illtyds RC Church.
So my nan was called Norah McCarthy nee Horgan and we are desperate for any information on the Horgans, she had quite a lot of brothers and sisters, I'll name some and see if it rings a bell with anyone, there was Cornelius, Patrick, Eileen, Mary, Kathleen. My nan's mum was a Donovan and she was called Jane Donovan nee Horgan. My nan was a twin, with Mary so this may help. My nan's dad was called Cornelius Horgan and we think he moved here from Cork sometime before 1913 because that is when he married my great grandma Jane Donovan
I only have one nan left and that is my dad's side, she is nearly 100! But my mum's mum and dad died relatively early, Phillip McCarthy aged 61 and Norah McCarthy nee Horgan when she was 69.
If anyone remembers any of these names or thinks that anything might fit at all I would be so so grateful. My mum isn't very well at the moment and is in hospital so if anyone out there on this forum has any information at all it would prove a big boost to her.
My nan and grandad moved away from Merthyr sometime between 1938 and 1941 and they went to Portsmouth and Bournemouth and eventually ended up in Coventry where my mum was born. But my Great Auntie Mary Worsfold nee Horgan lived in Merthyr all her life, she had a husband called George, he was a very big man and I think he did some boxing in his life. He actually helped bring the children out of the school from the Aberfan disaster. My grandad also spent sometime down the mines when he was younger.
I think both my nan and grandad were relatively poor but I think in Merthyr in that day and age most people were.
So thank you if anyone replies to me, you can email me on speedy_f66@hotmail.com with anything at all, any little tit bit of info you may have on the McCarthy's/Rowe's, Horgan's and Donovan's. If you have any photos that would be even better.
Thank you ever so much.
Julie Cotterill
