I would love to hear from anyone who played in a pop/ rock/ blues band from Merthyr in the sixties. There were loads, like the Desperados. (They were good) Cheating Hearts, which Lyn Matel ( Owen Money) sung with. He was better in the band, because he’s a DREADFUL comedian. How the hell did he get an MBO or whatever it was. ha ha The Saints. Come on there were loads and guitar players like Alan Compton and Lyn Rees. They were the Eric Clapton’s of Merthyr. Any photos? What was that band that played in the Heolgerrig Club on a Sunday morning before and after the stripper .. Led by a drummer and the bass player was Jeff ?
What was the name of the pop group that played weekly(?) at Merthyr's Palace dance hall in the early 60's please?(Sat. night). Would love to know. The 'boss' was clearly the drummer, who used to bang his drums as if no tomorrow! LOUD!!! Anyone remember Tommy Scott and the Senators playing there?(Tom Jones).
Hi, Yes his name was Pete Lovis and they also use to play at Heolgerrig Club on a Sunday morning when they had strippers there too. It was a riot ha ha I'm not 100% sure of the spelling, but I think it's LOVIS....
Hi, I believe so.. I’ll ask a friend of mine who knows him. He used to live in Penydarren, but moved to Heolgerrig back in the late 60s or early 70’s My sister lived in the same street.. Not sure about his hearing though ha ha
I’m very sorry to hear that. Strangely enough I saw Jeff who used to play bass guitar with him in town, last week. I was going to ask him, but he was speaking with a few people and I didn’t want to encroach. Next time I see him I will definitely ask and tell him about this site too.. Lets hope he's better.. Thanks for telling me.....
Hi, I 'm a newborn on here but know a little of the bands of the 60's. Clifton Price was the lead guitarist, Clive John the rythym guitarist and Lyn Mittell (later Owen Money) was the singer in a band called the Crescendos. Clifton and Clive were seriously good musicians but Lyn did not have the best voice in the world for sure. The band split in 1962 and Lyn formed the Bystanders. We went round the clubs and pubs in the valleys and were told to tone down the amplification at every venue. It was a good time. The Beatles were a Liverpool band and likewise the Welsh circuit had their own bands. One June evening in 1964 I travelled with another band to Ebbw Vale and in a rundown Miners' Hall was competing in a four band challenge. There was hardly anyone in the audience but one of the other bands was called Tommy Scott and the Senators. Playing to a nearly empty hall, on stage, Tom was still just outrageously raunchy. They won; he was just so different, and we were just a bit miffed. Later that year Tom's life changed for ever.
There were a few other bands on that show as well, and one was “ The Saints” They had a guy called Phil Gay (no he wasn’t, far from it in fact ha ha) and they had to come off the stage because his trousers had split.. He was one hell of a lad and the band weren’t too bad either.. There was a Terry who played drums, and a Tony who played bass but I don’t recall the others. Does anyone know the rest?
You are right and then on the Rocky Road. I think he lives in Penydarren now. It would be great to hear from him and others too. I wish more find out about this page and contribute.. Many thanks for doing so.. Ps his brother still lives in Victoria street.
