Hi, I'm a newbie here. I'm after any information whatsoever on the 60s band Chapter Five. If there are any photos or tapes anywhere, I'd give my right arm to see/hear them. Best wishes, Stacey.

Just discovered this site and although I am not born and bred Merthyr, I hope you don’t mind me joining in memories about musicians in the 60’s/70’s from Merthyr and the surrounding area already mentioned by some of you.
I started work for GPO telephones in Merthyr in 1965 and worked there for about 3 years, travelling from Tredegar.
I was already playing guitar in a Tredegar group called Vandels Victims and met Barrie Jones from Merthyr, who was also starting with the GPO, and played guitar with, I believe, Chapter 5. Sadly, Barrie passed away about 10 years ago, we remained friends for all those years. Barrie eventually joined with me in The Firm from Tredegar and we had a great time playing all the usual places over South Wales and beyond. We supported many of the chart bands such as Unit 4+2 (at the Queens Ballroom Tredegar), Pretty Things, Applejacks, and others I’ve forgotten! I remember Barrie taking me to meet Alan Crompton, who even then was into BB King, and Mickey Jones at the time, both great guitarists. Tony Davies (aka Brookes) from Tredegar was also a very good guitarist and we did our first appearance together before the Saturday morning pictures at the Olympia Cinema in Tredegar; my acoustic guitar, Tony’s Futurama plugged into his reel to reel and a snare drum and cymbal; I think I was about 12 and knew 3 chords!!
With The Firm, I remember playing some of the clubs in Merthyr and supporting Man at The Sands, (remember the galleon) I believe their first time out after the change from the Bystanders. What a change it was, no one quite understood, definitely ahead of their time. Also supporting The Herd (Peter Frampton) and Pink Floyd at the Castle(??) Cinema. Two weeks earlier we had supported The Herd in Pontypridd and Peter Frampton actually played my strat while we were chatting after the gig!!
Barrie and our drummer eventually left and Alan Snell from Ebbw Vale joined after he had left The Next of Kin (Ebbw Vale). Allan loved Buddy Rich/Gene Krupa and he was a great extrovert drummer, a real showman. Allan actually taught Henry Spinetti (brother, Victor was in The Beatles films) from Cwm to play drums and we all know how he progressed! Allan, in later years, went to live in Spain and sadly passed away a few years ago.
Later, the group split and Malcolm Higgs (singer) and I got together with Robert Edwards (Eddie) and ‘Cogsy” (never knew his real name) both from Merthyr and called ourselves Christopher Bean, which I think they brought with them. Eddie wasn’t a showman like Snelly but what a class drummer and nice guy. He knew Micky Jones well and brought him on our gigs a few times—intimidating!!
Eventually, we split, before I joined another group, with some other Tredegar and Cardiff people and played on a few years.
Sorry to ramble on, but thought I could add some of my Merthyr history and interest for some of you. Keep on plucking!!

Hi Mikea. I'm a bit confused,'Christopher Bean' was my band, along withe Edddie & Jethro, we had just changed our name from 'The Cheatin' Harts' & one of the first gigs we dd under that name was the 'Man' support at the Sands, (I'm Alan Crompton by the way),I don't remember another band being there that night. Hope you are well?, Cheers, Alan.

Hi Alan, Apologies for taking so long to make contact. Forgot about the post I made and only logged in again yesterday. Anyway, when I read your post, I started to doubt my own sanity (but only for a second)!! I checked back on some of the stuff I kept from that time and found the same ticket that you show in your post as well as a clip out of the local paper and a small poster/flyer. I also looked back in a book I kept of all the bookings we (a number of group names) had over several years and sure enough it shows Merthyr The Sands on the 31st March 1969 with a payment of £16. On top of all that I have a tax demand (in our singers name) against earnings from “Christopher Bean” for 1969-70. I tried to upload the images on here, as you had done, but tried all ways and failed. May be because I use a mac. I could email them to you if you give me your email address. As far as I can tell, Eddie played from September 1968 (Coggsy some time later) until about July 1969 when we went our separate ways. So, yes, you’re right, confusing? Perhaps we should meet up for a coffee or a pint, what do you think?? Good to talk to you. regards Mike

Hi jonpountney, I lived in the same street in Penydarren as Geoff Vaughan, the Bass player in this Band. I'm not 100% certain, but the name CHAPTER FIVE keeps running round in my head. ?? I was in a Band that played the Castle Cinema on a number of Saturday mornings. We started off as a 5 piece playing 60's covers by Small Faces etc. The 5 piece line up was :- Paul Leaker - Lead Guitar ( He was a dab hand with electronics and made mic's from Sarson's vinegar plastic bottles.) Phil Davies - Rhythm Guitar ( Ashamedly, I cracked Phil across the head with a Drumstick once for chatting to my girlfriend. Sorry pal, stupid thing for me to do) Derek Lloyd - Bass Guitar ( Brother of Clive Lloyd (Footballer, Norwich,Hereford, Merthyr etc) Derek was also no mean Footballer himself ) Phil Hagerty - Vocals ( Don't think Phil wanted to be in the Band really, but he was Derek's buddy and looked like one of the Small Faces ) Mansel Lewis - Drums (Olympic Red wine kit from Gamlins £104.00 paid for by my Gran. She passed away on the day after the final HP payment....!!) The 5 piece soon became a Trio, Paul Leaker, Phil Davies & Mansel Lewis and we rehearsed weekly at the Glamorgan Arms. For our gig at the Castle cinema we loaded all the gear on a cart and did the short journey to the Castle via the British Tip. Heck of a lot easier going down than coming back up ! I remember, one Saturday morning, playing on the Stage that had been set up for Herman's Hermits/Mindbenders/Phil Gaye Combo etc. We thought it was great to leave a small written message on the front of the stage "Tough Herman, we were here first". As if Peter Noone cared ! We were told by the Cinema Manager that when Pete Lovis was putting the line up together for the Show, he had come to see us. Never got to know what he thought, but we couldn't have impressed him too much I guess. The Merthyr Express published a photo of the Band about 10 years ago on the 'Who's who' page. I've been told that someone replied putting names to the faces, but said that they didn't think any of the Band continued with music........."U-hum" Hello !!!!...........Mansel
