Hello chrisviv there is a HOLLINGUM family tree on ancestry.com with that family? that says he emigrated at age 3 and she emigrated at age 8. It says he was born 15th DECEMBER 1827 and she was born 8th DECEMBER 1832 don't know how correct the research is however because it has them in Wales in 1861 on census and in the family story they had a lot of children and all born in America some born 1861 1862 1863??? so it might be the wrong family. Give the family tree a look to see if it is the family you are looking for.

What I did was look on the website www.freeBMD.ORG for his death year and his age.The year only gives block's of 3 months I then went to the library and looked through the newspapers on reels of film for the 3 months until I found reports. If you go to your local library or archive office in Swansea you can do the same thing you can however get distracted reading other things in the paper and sometimes what you are looking for is not in them but that's the chance you take. The local Library will normally only keep local newspapers to district the archives should have more papers from further away but not always. Its not difficult at all really. Mike

Hello looked in MERTHYR EXPRESS newspaper there are three reports 1st is about his retirement with a photo and write up this is on page 5 of February 4th edition 1982 Merthyr Express. Then a report of his death and photo on page 1 April 1st edition. Also a family acknowledgement on page 16 April 8th edition of paper. If you contact Merthyr Tydfil central library www.library.services@merthyr.gov.uk or Tel 01685 725258 you can ask them to send you copies of the reports they do charge a fee but not a lot if you give them the page numbers etc so they don,t have to spend time looking through newspaper. Hope this helps you. Mike

Hello It depends on where you live! in the UK /AMERICA/ AUSTRALIA/ CANADA or somewhere else. Look on the internet for your local Family History Society there are loads, contact them or join them they can give you the best ways to search. If in the UK most libraries have ANCESTRY,COM or FINDMYPAST free to library members and many will give some advice from their local studies librarian or go to regional record offices in the Uk or if near LONDON in ENGLAND the NATIONAL RECORDS OFFICE at KEW in LONDON .You could also ask THE CHURCH OF THE LATTER DAY SAINTS (THE MORMONS) they are good at family history. It also depends on what you want to find out and how far back you want to go. My advise is don't join one of the internet search companies until you known if you are that interested in doing family history as the subscriptions to the internet companies can be EXPENSIVE!!.Best wishes and good luck.

Hello the name was a local place name used for the old CAERDRAW district of the town or as it was also called the Village around the old Parish church of ST TYDFIL .There are some old stories of MONKS with White habits living in the area a long long time ago and the name came from that ,others have said it was a wrong translation from a WELSH name used in the area and others say that after the Plymouth Ironworks started and a water feeder canal was taken from the river Taff some of the houses were surrounded by water and with perhaps people coming to work in the area from the Hampshire/Dorset district of England it may have got the name from the Isle of Wight. Take your pick of the options?.There may be others don't think anyone really knows for sure. Mike

Hello David The school was knocked down sometime between 1970 and 1980 if I remember correctly. There were some school records held in DOWLAIS or MERTHYR TYDFIL Central Library but these may now have been sent to The Glamorgan Records Office in CARDIFF. The records usually gave pupils date of birth, name of parent or guardian and home address, possible previous school they may have attended. I guess that you have looked at the photos of the school on the OLD MERTHYR TYDFIL website if not have a look at them on the pages under heading SCHOOL'S, then under DOWLAIS CENTRAL SCHOOL. Hope this may give you a bit of help and hope you find a lot of info when you visit the towns in WALES.
Good luck all the Best! Mike

Hello Paul Llewellyn street is still there with some new houses built in place of old but it looks like no 41 has been knocked down. If you search on googlemaps you can see a street view of the houses.

Hello according to the Electoral Register list for Merthyr Tydfil 1918 and 1919 a THOMAS PUGH and EDWARD HAMER were residents if there were any females at the address they were not over the age of 30 which was the age of voting for female voters at that time at 41 LLEWELLYN STREET DOWLAIS/ MERTHYR TYDFIL. In 1918 Edward was in the army but was not in the Spring 1919 list. In 1925 a OWEN JOSEPH GALE was living at than address. Perhaps Edward returned to DOWLAIS after 1915 for a short period of time?. Hello Danni you could try putting a notice in the local weekly newspaper THE MERTHYR EXPRESS and there is a local free monthly newspaper THE MERTHYR TIMES to ask if there are any relatives of the family. All the best Mike
