Hi, I’ve been doing some research and according to the 1901 census, my family lived at number 9 Little Isle of Wight, I can’t find any reference to it online and was wondering if anyone knows where it might have been in Merthyr? Thanks 😊

Hello the name was a local place name used for the old CAERDRAW district of the town or as it was also called the Village around the old Parish church of ST TYDFIL .There are some old stories of MONKS with White habits living in the area a long long time ago and the name came from that ,others have said it was a wrong translation from a WELSH name used in the area and others say that after the Plymouth Ironworks started and a water feeder canal was taken from the river Taff some of the houses were surrounded by water and with perhaps people coming to work in the area from the Hampshire/Dorset district of England it may have got the name from the Isle of Wight. Take your pick of the options?.There may be others don't think anyone really knows for sure. Mike

Thank you! It’s so interesting. Do you know of anywhere that I could go to do some family research?

Hello It depends on where you live! in the UK /AMERICA/ AUSTRALIA/ CANADA or somewhere else. Look on the internet for your local Family History Society there are loads, contact them or join them they can give you the best ways to search. If in the UK most libraries have ANCESTRY,COM or FINDMYPAST free to library members and many will give some advice from their local studies librarian or go to regional record offices in the Uk or if near LONDON in ENGLAND the NATIONAL RECORDS OFFICE at KEW in LONDON .You could also ask THE CHURCH OF THE LATTER DAY SAINTS (THE MORMONS) they are good at family history. It also depends on what you want to find out and how far back you want to go. My advise is don't join one of the internet search companies until you known if you are that interested in doing family history as the subscriptions to the internet companies can be EXPENSIVE!!.Best wishes and good luck.
Mike

Hi, well I’m from Merthyr originally but now live in Swansea. I’ve researched my family tree, but I’m trying to find information on my paternal Grandfather. He lived in London and Cardiff but settled in meethyr and was (so I’m led to believe) in charge of the precinct in Merthyr. Any ideas where I could find any information? Thank you 😊

Hello looked in MERTHYR EXPRESS newspaper there are three reports 1st is about his retirement with a photo and write up this is on page 5 of February 4th edition 1982 Merthyr Express. Then a report of his death and photo on page 1 April 1st edition. Also a family acknowledgement on page 16 April 8th edition of paper. If you contact Merthyr Tydfil central library www.library.services@merthyr.gov.uk or Tel 01685 725258 you can ask them to send you copies of the reports they do charge a fee but not a lot if you give them the page numbers etc so they don,t have to spend time looking through newspaper. Hope this helps you. Mike

Thank you so much I will definitely do that. Can I ask how you found that information? I’ve got a few family members I’d like to research but no idea how to go about it. Thanks again for your help! Rebecca

What I did was look on the website www.freeBMD.ORG for his death year and his age.The year only gives block's of 3 months I then went to the library and looked through the newspapers on reels of film for the 3 months until I found reports. If you go to your local library or archive office in Swansea you can do the same thing you can however get distracted reading other things in the paper and sometimes what you are looking for is not in them but that's the chance you take. The local Library will normally only keep local newspapers to district the archives should have more papers from further away but not always. Its not difficult at all really. Mike

Hi Mike, I have just joined this site this evening. My purpose is regarding my Family Tree and the name Mahoney. I was about to ask the same question as acceber when I noticed this thread. I am pleased to see my question has all ready been answered by yourself. It is amazing that acceber's post was regarding 9 Little Isle of Wight while my query is regarding 10 Little Isle of Wight. What I do not fully understand though is how can house numbers be given to what is a district and not a particular street? Hello the name was a local place name used for the old CAERDRAW district of the town or as it was also called the Village around the old Parish church of ST TYDFIL .There are some old stories of MONKS with White habits living in the area a long long time ago and the name came from that ,others have said it was a wrong translation from a WELSH name used in the area and others say that after the Plymouth Ironworks started and a water feeder canal was taken from the river Taff some of the houses were surrounded by water and with perhaps people coming to work in the area from the Hampshire/Dorset district of England it may have got the name from the Isle of Wight.
