are there any plans for the tunnels at MORLAIS and the MERTHYR tunnels to be incorporated into the walk way system which exists (thankfully) on a lot of the old railway rotes in this area. I know the Merthyr tunnel was scheduled to be opened at one time, but this seems to have been put on hold.Obviously the tunnels would have to be closed at certain times for safety reasons e.g. night time, and this would require someone to do this, hence more money from bankrupt councils, so probably a bit of a non starter at this time in history

I cant see this ever happening to be honest, like you said the cost would just be huge and especially in the current financial climate.I think if it ever did happen in the future the morlais tunnell would be the best option as one of its portals is on the taff trail so this would be a great attraction to visitors who come to the area. The Miler tunnel as its known by most of the locals holds fond memories and ive been through it many times mostly without any torches.Just standing under the pepper pots and seeing the light up above is amazing.I found the entrance to the aberdare tunnel the other day,i was quite surprised that it wasnt overgrown, only been through there once and that was years ago as a child,so cant remember anything about it.

i went through the merthyr tunnel abernant to merthyr on a boiling hot day in june 1995, before the a470 was finished.it was a great relief to be in the cool of the tunnel! i think the tunnels are still inspected by the british railways property board from time to time

Same old story, of something that should have been kept with the railway to Brecon. The route would be a great tourist attraction now, and travellers would thrill to crossing the Pontsarn and Cefn viaducts. How I wish I'd used that route to get eventually to Three Cocks Junction and beyond.

Of the two tunnels, the Merthyr tunnel is in the best condition. No major rock falls, dry 90% of the 2,497 yards and generally in great nick. The Morlais tunnel is wet, wet, wet ! From the lake at the start of the Taff Trail portal, the water is at its worst at the first pepper pot (located at Brecon Mountain Railway) with a deluge coming in. All the way to the Pant portal, water flows are evident (as are the abandoned cars). The only problem with the Merthyr tunnel is its lenght. Can't see anyone getting insurance to open it up and it would be a nighmare to light. Some recent pictures from both tunnels. Merthyr Tunnel

Besides the known railway tunnels there are many more such features spread around Merthyr that only those of a certain age group would remember.
My father (76) advises me often about the tunnel under I guess could be called Incline Top.
The tunnel was last used to provide a firing range for BSA rifles when they were manufacturing the guns in Dowlais. According to my father it was bricked up and would be in good nick (how he would know that I don't know) He has often told me of other tunnels
