I remember Mair's shop well, there was the one in the top house of the row and the one in the bottom house of the row as the shop' were in the houses, converted to shop area. I went to the old County school for a year before moving to the newly built Pen-Y-Dre. Every morning after walking down the lane past the old Cherry Grove Park, then gwaunfarren baths, finally hurrying to the shop before going down Alexandra avenue to school. If they didn't have what you wanted in the top shop you'd go to the bottom shop. The shop's used to compete by taking a penny off their singles cigarettes, then all the kids that smoked went to the shop selling the cheapest singles. I wasn't a smoker.

I remember Mair's shop, we used to go there after Gwaunfarren baths. Isn't it funny how you were always starving after the baths, thank goodness for Mair's!!

Went to Geotre/County/Pen y Dre Schools and used both shops. Better selection of sweets in the top shop though I always thought.
The top shop was owned by an old lady called Mrs Morgan. Her daughter was a teacher in Geotre (Gurnos) Infants in the 60s/70s. If you were rowdy in the shop the younger Morgan would come through from the back, tell you off (she normally knew who you were ) and even bar you if necessary!
I quite liked Mair (the lower shop) because she once gave me free cabbage leaves for my tortoise!
