Hello My ancestors the Hennessys came to Merthyr from Cork Ireland in the early 1870's. They settled in the Quarry Row and Bethesda Street areas. They worked mostly in the Coal iron and Steel industries. They married into the Harringtons, Cahills, Donovans. I know that they were catholics but I do not know anything of their Schooling or lifestyle etc. Some became Publicans of the Wellington Pub in Merthyr and the Blue Boar Dowlais. They were also related to the Driscolls and Mahoneys. I wonder if any of the Hennessy's still in the Merthyr area are related to me. If you think you may be or you know people who are could you please post on this thread.

Alice, many of these people, Donovans, Driscolls, are related to me. My grandmother's brother worked or lived at the Blue Boar. I visited Merthyr last year at Quarry Row, where the Hennessey's lived. My grandmother was the only girl with six brothers. Married James Ahern and immigrated to Pennsylvania in 1888. She was born in Whitehall Cork. Anything sound familiar? I do not know of any Flynn connection. How are you related to Hennesseys?

Alice & "myladio"
I am researching Donovan's from Dowlais, how are the Hennessy's connected to them? This name rings a bell with me when I was looking at census forms & elect rolls. My Donovan family lived in South Street, Mary Street, horse street & wind street.

Hello MikeMerthyr
I have not been on here for sometime. So I only just saw your reply. Several of my family the Hennesys lived in different numbers in Quarry Row. My father was born in Bethesda street. The Wellington pub was run by my fathers Grandfather Timothy Cahill until 1901. Thank you for that information. Is there any history of the miners in Merthyr when they joined etc. I know my father Joined in 1906 when he was 12. His uncle also ran the blue Boar pub in Dowlais until his death in 1942 he was Maurice Hennessy. They came from cork to wales in the early 1870 and worked in the mining and steel industries. The married in to the Cahill. Harrington’s Aherns. Driscoll. Donegan Donovan Mahoney families. If any of these names are familiar please reply.

Hello Alice, I assume you have checked with the old records held by Merthyr Tydfil central library. They have school records, church records marriages/death/baptism.They can also look for any obits in the local newspaper if there is an obit and you can give them a date of death.(eg) There is report of the death of a Michael Harrington age 28 a labourer at Dowlais works who lived at 4 Wind Street Dowlais this is on page 9 of Merthyr Express newspaper 5th August !905.There may be a death report of Maurice Hennessy in 1942 although the newspapers were not as full as they were normally as to save on paper and ink because of the war!

Hello mike
I have not checked at all with Merthyr Library. I did put an letter in the local Merthyr paper years ago and I got several replies back. I have most birth and death certificates. It was more historical information I wanted or people related to my tree who may have information.
Thank you for your help.
