Hello, and thank you for creating this website. I live in Los Angeles, California, USA and I've enjoyed looking at all of the historic photos.
I wonder if anyone knows anything about the following family, (see below) I'm 99% certain that these folks are my husband, Kent Llewellyn's ancestors. This family seems to have moved around in the area, with one of the sons, John ultimately coming to America in 1881.
One note: I believe, due to my census research, that this Dowlais family is the one that we're related to, but an aunt thinks that the family lived in Cardiff. She also remembers hearing that they were from a town that was pronounced "cartilege", or "cartiledge"... if anyone is familiar with a place that 'sounds' like cartilege, I would very much appreciate the info.
We are planning a trip to Wales in April/May 2007, and I know it may be a long shot, but I would love to meet a distant ancestor... I know these names are pretty common in Wales, but the late 1800's weren't THAT long ago so I hope someone will recognize this family and will be able to help me confirm the connection to my husband's family... Thanks in advance to anyone who can help...
In 1861, they lived at #28 Ivor St. Dowlais
In 1871, they lived at #13 Garden St. Dowlais
Head of household and his wife:
David Llewellyn (64) Watchman, born St. Denetts 1807
Mary Llewellyn (44) Wife, born St. Peter, Carmarthenshire 1827
Children:
John Evan (22) Puddler Dowlais Ironworks, born Bridgend 1850 (see additional details below)
Mary (16), born Llandaff 1855
Charles (13) Laborer, born Dowlais 1858
Boarder (in 1871): Rees Davies (24) Smith
In 1881, I have a Charles and a John Llewellyn living as boarders with Elizabeth (widow) and Mary Griffiths (dau.) at #40 Mt. Pleasant (??) St., Dowlais.
John Llewellyn went to America in 1880 or 1881 and married Rachael Davies or Davis in either Allentown or Catasauqua, Pennsylvania. They had two children ( Charles A. 1884 and David 1886) in Pennsylvania. By 1888 they were living in Youngstown, Ohio where they had the following children: Thomas H. 1888, John Evan 1890, Mary 1892 and Albert 1895.
Rachael Davies/Davis came to America in either 1880 or 1881. Her father may have been Thomas H. Davies, who may have married a Jones in Wales or Penn, and who may have had a sister named Maragret.
John Llewellyn died in Youngstown, Ohio and his obituary (1918) says that he has a living sister in Wales.
I found a Charles Llewellyn (possibly John's brother) in Dowlais (Penydarren) in 1891. They lived at #54 Mary (??) St. His family is listed as:
Charles (head) born 1858
Ann (wife) born 1858
Children:
Mary, 1884
Annie J. 1885
John 1887
Daniel 1888
David 1891
By 1901, they also had these children: William H. 1892 and Elizabeth 1900 - living at #54 Walter (?) Road
Well, I know that's a lot of information, but I was just trying to be thorough...help!
Thanks,
Perri ;D
