Hi. The last time I was back in Merthyr my Aunt took me to a pub that we went through Pontsticill to get to. Although that could have been a scenic route. I think the town it was in was Talybont on Usk. The pub was next to a Church and Cemetery, and opposite some cottages. I can't for the life of me remember it, but it had an outdoor area at the front on the road side.
Does anyone know the pub I'm talking about? It was a beautiful place to have a meal on a summers day, and the next time I come back I would love to visit it again.

It was definately open in 2005, which was the last time I was back in Merthyr. I've tried looking up pubs in Talybont on Usk (It was definately a similar name. It was something ON something, and the only town I can think that fits that is Talybont on Usk) but I haven't had any luck at all.

Hi. Could it have been The White Hart in Talybont on Usk. Or if it was Ponsticill, it could have been the Church Tavern with the grave of Crawshy Bailey ? in the churchyard.
Tony.

I'm sure you mean the Church Tavern in Vaynor. It has now closed and is a private house. I have been informed that it is now closed and is a private house. I ???used to go there as a teenager back in the 70's on summer evenings. As you said, it was very pleasant to sit outside.

It caertainly sounds like the pant cad ifor to me.It would have been in 2005 that this place was given a full refit complete with a fairly large extension to the side of the original building. It is opposite pant cemetery near the brecon mountain railway, and the cottages next to the pub are some of the oldest in the village.

Its a shame to see the state of the pontsarn inn.The place is boarded up with parts of the roof missing and generally an eyesore.Does anyone know what the future for this place is? Ive heard a few different rumours but nothing seems to be happening.I heard it was going to be made into stables

I don't think so Jeff, I thought it was called the Red Lion, but I've looked that up and had no luck.
I guess I could just drive out there next time I'm home and hope I don't get lost!

Hi The red lion is in Heolgerrig, The red cow and the Butchers Arms are in Pontsticill, an old school mate of mine has one of these two pubs but I'm not sure which one, His name is Clifford Rees or Biffo as we used to call him

Could have been the Red Cow, I suppose. I'll just have to check it out next time I'm back!

Hi kedgie, As someone who has spent a considerable amount of time visiting local hostelries. I wonder if the pub was The Red Lion at LLangynidir which is just down the road from Talybont. The name also fits in with your recollections. Hwyl qygs1966

I am sure that the Elders of Iron(Merthyr) passed a law many years ago prohibiting Pubs being built next to Church's and graveyards ....as I have scowered the nearby countryside of Pontstic and Merthyr and no triple heavenly places/areas have been detected. However Kedgie,I have walked the streets with my 8 camera coal miners hat on and come up with two possiblenesses for your perusal... Google Streetview stole their technology from my grandfather...a lowly paid coal miner from Treharris. See website troedyrhiw-greenmeadow.blogspot.com/2010/05/special-pics.html
