A member of my family, surname Bowen, was Lady Charlotte Guest's 'agent' during the 1840s. I would be grateful for any pointers to where I might be able to find information. Sincerely, Rachel Bowen

In the 1840s, surely your ancestor would have been an agent for the Dowlais Works and not Lady Charlotte Guest ( she only became involved in the Works after the death of Sir Josiah John in 1851 ). Fortunately, the records of the Dowlais Works are vast and probably one of the best collections for any industrial enterprise; although for the nineteenth century there are no lists of employees, but there are records of all salaried staff. The collection can be found at the Glamorgan Record Office The Glamorgan Building King Edward VII Avenue Cathays Park Cardiff CF10 3NE

By the way, Rachelb and Rachel Bowen are one and the same person.
Thank you for the pointer. I am not sure whether the family member was agent for the estate ot the works. They may, of course, be one and the same. I'll contact the Record Office. Sincerely, Rachel Bowen
