Hi, Sorry for not replying sooner, like I mentioned my great grandparents lived in Well Street, I’d really like to know what the places were like, how many rooms, layout, etc, they lived at 35 then moved up to 38, any detail would be greatly appreciated,

Hi Viv, Well Street had buildings numbered up to 73, some of them may have been shops as not all the building numbers are in the electoral lists as being used as a home. I looked on 1911 census for no 35 and 38 it said that no 38 had two residents in the property a man and woman with a son (Williams familly) in 3 rooms and another man in 1 room called Edwards so 4 rooms in property probably 2 rooms upstairs 2 rooms downstairs normally with a outside toilet. It said in census not to count Pantry/kitchen so possible 1 other small room as a Pantry/kitchen ?. In no 35 Well Street there was a family called Thomas 2 parents and son and daughter that property said 4 rooms also so probably same layout as no 38. Hope this helps you. Mike

Hi Mike, Thanks for coming back with that information, I’m trying to get a picture of what the street was like, (probably could have guessed) 1890 the family were living in Well St. by 1911 they lived in 147 Dowlais High street, my great grandfather and grandmother both died there. Hope you don’t mind could you give me a rough idea of what Patroit Court and Lewis Court would have looked like, again any information would be greatly appreciated, Thanks for your time Mike, Regards Viv

Hi Viv, Both Lewis Court and Patriot row were 3 or 4 houses off a main street in a cul-de-sac at the back of the street houses, usually got to by a small lane/gully from the street they were normally small 1up/ 1down or 2up/ 2down houses. They normally did not have a front garden and often no back garden either they may have also have had to share a toilet. Hi Mike, That’s great what you’ve sent, like a lot of people I’m doing my family tree and I want to put a bit of meat on the tree that concern certain people, over the years when I’ve been to Merthyr I’ve popped in to Dowlais library and bought books that hopefully might have pictures of where my relations lived but the closest I came to was the corner of Well St. at least I’ve something. Thanks again for all the information you’ve given me it’s really appreciated, Have a good Christmas I’ll probably be in touch in the new year, Regards Viv
