Hello ,My name is Len and my wife and I have just visited the
Aberfan disaster site and Cemetary. Ever since I was a small boy growing up in the 60s in Australia ,and watching a documentary on The Aberfan Disaster narrated by Richard Burton,I have always wanted to visit Aberfan .Well after 40 odd years we have finally made the trip . We stayed at the site for a good hour trying to create an image in our minds on what went wrong on that day in OCT 1966.. Pictures , thousands of images going around in our heads , the grief, panic, sorrow, communities from all around surrounding suburbs helping in silence to overcome the pain and suffering. My wife and I shed tears as we both just looked in astonishment even as its coming up to 50 years since the tragedy. The final resting ground for the children and the adults who lost their lives at the Cemetery ,was a chilling experience for us as well.Seeing the children's parents who had departed since and buried with them made us feel that they were together at last .I still surf the net to search for more photos on that day and days after. We would be grateful if anyone could help us in our search . Even through our sorrow we are glad that we came to Aberfan and it will be with us in mind and spirit for the rest of our lives .God Bless the children and everyone in Aberfan from the past to present.Regards Len and Lana Felice .Sydney Australia

Greetings from the UK, Len and Lana! I don't recall the Aberfan doco narrated by Richard Burton-are you sure? I used to live in Aberfan and attended both schools ( Pantglas Junior and Sec Modern). I joined the RN in 1965, and my(late) parents moved to England where I now live! We used to live ( remains now grassed over) opposite the Mac hotel, Aberfan, (red-bricked building-you may have noticed it). The memorial garden is certainly an eerie spot! When there last I noticed a CCTV camera- sad sign of the times. Before I forget, Len, google the terrific alangeorge/what's new? site. Alan passed away last year and the site has slowed down somewhat, but it is still worth trawling through the pictures of old-I'm on a few school photos myself!! I have done a lot of research into the disaster: can you believe that while the local mines had tip-top health & safety, the tips had none! No-one really bothered even though there had been several previous tip slides! ( Warnings in short!)Had they then the disaster would certainly never have happened. The children died violently. May I recommend(it doesn't cost much from Amazon) "Our Hirwaeth". It's written by locals and is an interesting read about Aberfan, including some of the Disaster victims and mothers. You might not have realised but where you once stood it was once part of the classroom complex? Maybe you did notice? If interested I can recommmend a few books on the subject? Let me know. Regards,
Jeff Adams
