I'm doing some research as I've always been very interested in Timothy John Evans of the 10 Rillington Place infamous John Reginald Christie murders. Many have obviously seen the film, and like myself, saw Evans, played by John Hurt, get off the train at Merthyr Vale railway station and walk up into Aberfan. Timothy Evans left Merthyr with his parents at the age of 11 for London. But he returned to Merthyr to live for 2 years and worked in the coalmine. Did he work in Merthyr Vale colliery ? Did he live in Aberfan ? did he attend Pant Glas Junior school ? Anyone have any answers please.

I confess I have not seen the movie for years but I do NOT remember John Hurt walking to Aberfan! I was born and brought up there in the 50's and sixties. I do recall John Hurt in the movie visiting Merthyr Vale, near the station area, if memory serves right. I attended both Junior and Secondary Pantglas school. There is a Welsh Coal Mine forum-just google the words-which may be of assistance to you. My grandfather was a miner long ago and worked in a pit at Abertillery, south Wales. Unfortunately, not all of these sites are helpful-I tried to get information about his time there, but no-one bothered to reply. Merthyr Vale colliery was a stone's throw away. Why don't you (you may already have)buy a book on him and the trial, etc., and peep into the bibliography, there may be further info' there. Find out who his defense team was-some may still be alive and refer you to the right place to dig out the info' you require. Write to various main libraries. There must also be a museum somewhere, and also a library specialising in such murders and previous trials. Good luck!

The first place to start would be to view local and national newspapers at the time, for instance the Merthyr Express is available in Merthyr Central Library, the South Wales Echo and Western Mail would also be worth looking at. You’d get a feel by reading them of the circumstances at the time and there will be background information on him. Wikipedia has a good bibliography listing of published books on the subject, they would also list sources in their indexes. Employment records from collieries don’t exist particularly pre NCB formation so no use to you there. As for the film, I understand the café on the square in Merthyr Vale was used as well as the station below.
Hope this helps Viff

Hi, thank you very much for replying and the information you have given. I haven't been into this website for some years, hence the long time in my reply. I must visit this website much more often. It is a terrific website after all.
