I am looking for any information about the Donovan Family that lived on Bethel St in 1860's and 70's. My great great grandfather's name was Jeremiah. His wife was Elizabeth Lewis. They had children named Daniel,Mary , Hannah , David , Robert Cornellius, Ellen , John, and Elizabeth. At the time of their marriage in 1859 they lived at Jackson's Bridge. I am trying to locate any Donovan's that may have stayed in Wales instead of going to the US. They also lived on Quarry Row. Elizabeth Lewis' parents were David and Hannah. Robert married Ellen O'Brien and her parents were Dennis and Margaret. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You

There was a Coun Gerry Donovan who lived in Twynyrodyn, Merthyr. I am not sure when he died but he was mentioned in the Merthyr Express early in 1980 as being on the scene at Rhydycar after two people died in a flood after a culvert burst late the previous year. I believe he had two sons but I don't know where they are now. But there are probably other Donovans in Merthyr. It's always worth a check at Merthyr Library on such information.

Thank you for the replies. When I check the Wales census records there are a lot of Donovan's between 1851 and 1891 in Merthyr Tydvil. A relative is sure to be there still. I'll keep trying. Have a great day

Kathy, just a long shot really but in today's Merthyr Express there is a mention of a Lloyd Donovan (the youngest person in Wales to climb Mount Kilimanjaro at the age of 14) of Cilsanws Lane, Cefn Coed, Merthyr Tydfil, and his father Jason. You never know, they could be descendants of the Donovans you are looking for although there seem to be quite a lot of them in the area. Anyway, best of luck.

I too remember a Johnny Donovan. He ran a butchers shop in North Street. He was about six foot I think, a very cheery face. His mother used to help in the shop too. He must have been in his thirties, back in the 1960s. I don't think any of those shops exist, today.

My grandfather was Joseph John Donovan, known as Jack who died in 1974.
He lived in Georgetown mainly. His father John Donovan died 14 days after him and he lived in Swansea Road.
Beyond that I do not know.

My great, great grandfather was Michael Donovan, as far as I know in 1881 he was living at 324 Company row, (I don't know whereabouts this was exactly, but would be interested if anyone knows), he had at this time 3 brothers, William , James and John.
Don't know if there is any connection...

Hi
I don't know if this will help but I am a Donovan. I used to live in Williams Terrace Twynyrodyn. My Dad was David William Donovan, I don't know too much about his past as he rarely spoke about it. But I know he was from Dowlais Rocky Road I think. He has a sister Eileen and a brother who died in a mining accident with his Dad. He married Ann Richards from Twyn. He died 4 years ago. I suppose in a way I am the last of the Donovans in that line as I have two daughters. I have cousins on here who may know more history about the past but I know so little. I you find anything please pass it on
