Hi all, we are in the middle of a coal mine disaster here in the US, Virginia. I am sure that everyone even remotely connected to Merthyr knows the dangers of mining. The TV reports here state that an average coal miner earns $62,000.00 a year, about 40,000.00 GB pounds. My Grandfather, William Flynn was a "below ground miner" in Troedyrhew in 1911. My wife asked me what he would have earned in 1911 and I replied that it would probably not have been even 5 pound a week. Does anyone have any idea?

My father worked as a Miner in 1937 and his pay was £0, 17, 11 per week, in today’s money that is 90 pence a week or $1.38.
