When I used to live in Merthyr many moons ago we would go around town to all the pubs we could, but always end up in the Chinese restaurant next to the Vulcan, and I'm sure that that was called Hing Hongs. If you ate there BEFORE 10pm the table cloths were out, if AFTER 10pm, down to tables only. There used to be queues waiting to get in there on the weekends.

Yeah, my old crowd drank at the express back room, across the alley from the betting shop and Hing Hongs in the late 60's. It was unpretentious to say the least! One famous patron was an unemployed shepherd who used to collect the empties for a pint of scrumpy. You could pretty much be left alone and get away with all sorts of stuff in there - The only person that I remember ever getting thrown out was Malcolm Griffiths who came in through the urinal on a horse and ordered a bucket of cider from Jerry.
I can still hear Jerry's "time" call - "that's it en boys"
