what was the main rail access to the Dowlais ironworks, the sole remains of which is the Blast House? Was it via the route know as the zig zag lines? i ask this, as Cae harris station seems to be a fair bit higher than where the blast house stands as the only real reference to the site, thanks mike

Hiya Mike, Have a look at this map www.alangeorge.co.uk/dowlais.htm , it's brilliant, should answer all your questions. I can remember (just!) works trains running through Caeharris, they crossed the high street next to my Nan's post office, the whole building used to shake, but those trains were going to & from the Ivor Works.

if it's access to the ivor works you want. there was a rail track down from pant to dowlais central station. there was branch off to the i c i works and one to the ivor works it would go where the car auctions are now

thank you both, it is specifically the main dowlais ironworks that i meant, and the zig zag lines would have been a way of losing height from the cae harris branch, but it would have limited the size of the trains using this route. I can,t see any other real way that non tramway traffic could have got out of the ironworks complex.

That's brilliant Alan. There's so much stuff on your site that I still haven't seen despite browsing for hours. You know I mentioned the trains crossing the road next to my Nan's post office.... And just as a point of intrest the wall on the right of this pic is the front boundary wall of my Dad's current house. Sorry about the thread hijack Mike

i was at the MURIEL TERRACE crossing this month to try and picture the scene when the works was intact.i was born and bred about 5 minutes from the CWMFELIN steelworks of R.T.B. which was in CWMBWRLA ,SWANSEA, their rail link was onto the main line from SWANSEA to CARMARTHEN, the main offices still exist as a centre for people with physical handicaps, and the rest of the site is being used for housing

they are now planining to build 420 houses on the old iron works site in penywern, they say that the ground as now settled enough to build on the land, was in there the other day walking our dogs and couldnt get over how big the site is, it seems to go for miles,
