Hi - does anybody know any history associated with the Mountain Ash in Twynyrodyn, Merthyr. My Great Grandfather (David Thomas) owned/ran it in the 1950's. Interested in an history or comments - Thanks

Hi Jerry. Don't know much about the history of "The Mount" but I remember Dave running it. I used to be a nipper and would go over with my friend David Jones to the cubby hole as you walk in, as it was split into a bar and snug area then. We would take empty Rhymney Bottles from a lady called Ruby who used to live near us in Glasier Road. We would get a few pennies back on the bottles. Later on when I was allowed to go to the pub I remember that on a Friday night it was packed as they had quite a successful darts team. A person comes to mind was Gwilliam Garland, who would spend hours practising. I also remember watching the first cup final that was televised in colour (Leeds v Chelsea) in the Mount. Over the years it has changed and Geoff took over and ran it for quite a number of years. It has always been a popular pub in Twyn.

I think Geoff has relinquished the ownership of the Mount now, although he still has a pub in Abercanaid. My brother run it for a bit a couple of months ago. But I don't know who has it now. It was and still is a great pub. Everytime I go home I always end up there with my brother. Years ago half the Dowalis Male Voice choir used to "drop in" after practice and then the doors got shut! I've heard of the name Curtis, but not sure if I know him, as I've been away for more years than I can remember. I used to live in Glasier Road, so it was just a quick walk across the Inky!

Thanks for the info on The Mount. I visited the pub back in August, but unfortunately it was closed. I'll try again next time I'm in the area.
Does anybody have any memories of David Thomas (Landlord back in the 1950's) and his wife Maggie? 'd be interested to hear any stories or info about them. Thanks

Had many a happy "lock-in" in the Mount when Geoff had it, not only was it a brilliant pub it's also the nearest we've got to a local. I'm almost ashamed to sav I haven't been in there for years. As davidj says above Geoff moved down to Abercanaid, I think he had The Richards?
Sorry Jerry, can't remember your relarives, I was -20 back then.
