Hi All
I am researching my family tree, and have come across a side of the family that moved from their farming roots in Pembrokeshire in the 1870's and the 1900's and moved to Penydarren, Merthyr. I have a few names, Thomas B John born c.1899, John John born 1871 and Caleb John born 1840.
I know that the family were living in 3 and 30 High Street, Penydarren in 1901, and they were Butter Merchants.
Anyone with ANY information would be greatly appreciated.
Chris John

My brother is searching for the John Family connections in Penydarren as well. My Great Grandfather was a John John who lived in North Street Penydarren. His son (My Grandfather ran a bakery there until the early 1920's when he moved back to Pembrokeshire with his son (my Dad who's 87 years old). My father was born in North Street in 1921.

Hello Chris John, We think our Bowen family originated in Nevern in Pembrokeshire (but can't find the connection. We think they were part of the Bowens of Llwyn Gwair. I don't know if you have any knowledge of this family, but would be grateful if you have. I knew a Hafwen John, who was deputy head of Ysgol y Berwyn in Bala when I taught there about 25 years ago. - Would she be any relation of yours? I live in France now. My immediate family on my father's side were living in Tredegar in 1871 - my grandfather having been born the year before. Their subsequent movements are well known to us, and their immediate ancestors were in the Merthyr/Tredegar/Vaynor area as early as 1801 - but the link with Pembrokeshire we can't find. It would be good if movements from the more remote areas to the industrial areas was better documented. Perhaps it will be one day.

Hello Rachel, I was born in Newport which is a small town across the Nevern Estuary in Pembrokeshire. I know Llwyngwair Manor which was the manor house for the farm estate. I don't know too much about the previous owners but the estate is now a caravan site and was run by Ennis Caravans of Cross Hands. One contact you could make is with the local County Councillor Robin Evans who has lived in Newport for a number of years and could put you in touch with a local historian. Another avenue of information is Dr Brian John who is very knowledgeable of the local history for the area. If you google Newport Pembrokeshire there will be a web site with contact details for both.

When I went to school in Merthyr in the 50's and 60's there used to be a family called 'John' living in Penydarren. Norman John and his sister had a father called Albert John who was a Councillor at one time Mayor of Merthyr. May be worth making local enquiries?

hello Merthyr Lad, I don't know whether there is any family connection with the Deri Bowens. And hello and thank you to the person who suggested the connection with the village near Nevern. I missed this item when it was posted. I'll look it up as soon as I can. Thanks both. Rachel
