I don't really know the area, but I looked on www.Streetmap.co.uk and found a Mary Street in Merthyr Tydfil.

Hi Tricia, thanks for the link. I'm not sure if Dowlais is actually just an area of Merthyr Tydfil or if its a village so I was unsure whether Mary Street, Merthyr is the same as Mary Street, Dowlais. If anyone can enlighten me I'd be really grateful.

Hi, Mary Street Merthyr Tydfil is not the same as Mary Street in Dowlais, as Kenkitty says there was a Mary Ann Street in Dowlais but it was demolished in the 1960s. I cannot see a Mary Street on my map, but I will investigate and come back to you, unless anyone else knows. Alan

Thank you Alan thats really helpful. I've double checked on the census form and it says:
76 Mary Street - Merthyr Tydfil is down as the Civil Parish, Urban District and Parliamentary borough, Dowlais is down as the town and Penydarren is the Ward of the Urban district.
I do hope its still there as my sister and I are coming to Merthyr Tydfil in April to do some family research and hopefully find the place our grandfather was born and brought up.

If you mean Mary Ann Street, Dowlais I do recall the was a "square" with some houses tucked between that street and Walter Street which was the street below. I lived in Walter Street in the late 50s/early 60s and my sister lived in Mary Ann Street in the late 60s early 70s . Mary Ann Street and most of Walter Street were pulled down in the mid -70s.

Further to my earlier post, if you're coming to visit MT go to Berry Square in Dowlais. The new houses in Berry Square are built on what was the north side of Walter Street and the south side of Mary Ann Street and the square would have been appropx there. Just stand by the Carmarthen Arms pub and look north west!!Enjoy your trip.

There was definately a Mary Street in Dowlais, but it was demolished many, many years ago.
Mary Street was included within the area that became the now demolished Dowlais Flats.
The site is now developed by the housing association.

Further to my earlier posts, it looks as if there was both a Mary and Mary Ann Street in Dowlais. Look at this site's street index at the Dowlais page 3 and you'll see a picture of Mary Street in the 60s. If you look at all the other pics on Dowlais page 3 it will give you an idea of how bustling and contained the 'town' Dowlais was in up until the ealy 70s when a lot of it was demolished.
