Have just noticed your posting. I have ancestors in Dowlais and Pennydarren. My paternal grandmother was called Emily Dawkins, her father was Henry Dawkins and her mother was Ann Lewis. There is a Letitia Weale around and about 1901, she had a daughter called Maggie born 1898. I also remember an Aunty Annie-Florence, whose maiden name was Riordan! She was a Sister at the general hospital in Merthyr

It seems we are related (if distantly). My grandfather Daniel George Riordan had a sister Annie Florence - the mother of Sister Annie at the hospital I think. The Dawkins family lived next door at 4 Lloyd St.I would be interested in sharing information. You can reply directly to bardan@ukonline.co.uk Hope to hear from you. A friend of mine, Colin Dawkins lives at Haydn Terrace, Penydarren. Aust is on the River Severn, near Bristol in the County of Avon. There was a Ferry running from there to Beachley at Chepstow until the 1960s, when the Servern Bridge was built. Click Here: www.bbc.co.uk/wales/southeast/sites/chepstow/pages/timryan.shtml

Does anybody know when Lloyd street Dowlais and surrounding area was demolished? This was between North street and the Iron Works (Ivor). and Well street? Or is there a website with information about this kind of change? Presumably post WW2?

It looks like there will be many Dawkins links. I will reply to Lis and Bob by direct email re Emily Dawkins, Letitia Weale,James Weale. I have seen a couple of references to a Royal Oak Inn and James Weale. One was for George st Dowlais (not ours I think?) this was on the Curious Fox website. The other was in Troedyrhiw and I think this is our James Weale. His brother William was killed in WW1 - a good site for any WW1 casualties is the Commonwealth War Graves Commission ( www.cwgc.com or .org or .net I can't remember exactly but a google search will give it) this gives some basic info about the individual and the theatre of war.
