Hi Gwyneth
Firstly, can I apologise for not replying to you sooner but I have not had the opportunity to log into the forum for some time.
My Ancestors were as follows: John Price b. 1841 married Rachel Edwards 1842 - on the 1891 census they were living at 24 Church Street, The Duke Inn
Their Children are as follows: Mary Price b. 1868 Esther Price b. 1875 Rachel Jane Price b. 1877 Lizzie Price b. 1884 David Price (my gg-frandfather) b. 1881 - He married Sarah Ann Prytherch b. 1882. At the date of there marriage in 1902 David Price was resident at the Duke Inn, his mother Rachel was running the pub on the 1901 census.
Are we connected?
Regards
Paul

Who were the parents of your John Price born 1841. It may be a long shot but I have a Thomas Price who married a Mary James. Their children would appear to be the same period as your John. Thomas & Mary had Elizabeth b1841, Annie & Thomas. I have these brief records because Elizabeth married into my family Jenkins.

Hi, I am new to this site but wondered if anyone knew anything about a Margretta / Gretta Jones who is listed at living at Duke Inn Dowlais on her marriage certificate in 1902. Her father was a farmer - Richard - so I guess she might have been an employee at the pub. Can anyone help??
Many thanks and good luck with your own reseach

Hi Paul
Margretta Jones married Herbert Watkins 4th August 1902. Herbert Watkins was a clothier and had a shop or was assistant in a shop in Merthyr Tydfil. In 1908 when my Taid was born they lived 5 Alexandra Road.
Any further information would be great
thanks Laura

Hi Laura
I have a copy of the 1901 census and Margretta is not living at the Duke Inn Well Street. My Great Grandfather, David Price was living there in 1902 on the 19th June when he married Sarah Ann Prytherch, she lived at 9 Church Street. Like you say perhaps Margretta was working there at the time, or she could have just been a lodger unitl she married?
Good luck
Paul

Hi Paul
thanks for checking for me on the 1901 census. The marriage certificate does not mention an occupation so perhaps she was a lodger? Not sure.
Herbert was a clothiers Assistant working out of Wellington Street - not sure where that is. My Geography of Merthyr is very limited.
Thanks again Laura

Hi Laura Wellington st Merthyr was near where the St Tydfil’s Shopping centre Merthyr is now. If you have a look in the street index on this site you will find some photo's there.
