During the mid to late 19th century my ancestors, Parry/Davies, were proprietors of 3 Pubs/Inns at Merthyr Tydfil. They were: the Black Lion Inn at 58 Picton St.; Heathcack Inn at Penry St. (the "a" in "cack" should be an "o", but this forum site considers the last syllable of this word a profanity); the Rainbow Inn at Castle St. I have read the very informative "Pub" section within the "Old Merthyr Tydfil" site, but I am hoping to find more specific history/information about the above three Pubs/Inns, and the people involved in them. Did my ancestors own these buildings and if so for how long? Are any of these buildings still standing? I would be very gratefully for any information about this subject.

Passing through pant recently I noticed that the Pantscallog pub was closed down,my uncle, Mog. Evan, kept this pub through the war years, he always had good trade. He was also a good landlord. He would never allow women in his pub. Seeing the young "LADIES" of today,do you think he was a visionary.? But he would be locked up for doing that today. In our do what you like society.

I have just started tracing my ancestors and in doing so found my great great grandmother, Hannah Jones/Evans was innkeeper of the victoria inn, kings head and then devonshire arms, dowlais. I am sure none are left now but would be interested in info. I though it was amazing she had been in three of them til I looked at the long list of pubs in the area. Might explain why my dad was tea total, but I have rebounded!

I was interested to see I have some distant relations in this forum. Gaei in particular is definitely related as our grandfathers were brothers. I am descended from Alfred Parry (William's eldest brother). Alfred married twice - first to Catherine Lewis (at The Black Lion Inn) run by her brother Samuel Lewis. Alfred's second wife (my grandmother) was Lily Ann Davies from Llangynwyd, Maesteg.
Alfred's siblings were Margaret (Maggie), Benjamin, Lewis, John, Minnie & William. Their father and mother were Lewis Benjamin Parry and Mary Ann (nee Samuels). Lewis Benjamin Parry's siblings were: Mary, John & Thomas (twins) and Ann, Lewis being the youngest as far as I have been able to ascertain. Their parents were John Parry b. 1805/6 Llanstephan, Clifford, Radnorshire (now Powys). and Margaret (nee ?) b. 1809 Llanstephan, Rad. John was a farmer at Upper Rhydness farm and had over 100 acres (the exact figure escapes me for the moment). When they all moved to Merthyr John (retired) lived with his eldest daughter Mary who ran an 'eating house'.
Does anyone have information on my grandmother Lily Ann Parry (nee Davies) whose brother was William T Davies. Their parents were William Davies and Margaret Davies (nee Jones). Margaret dies when Lily Ann was about 3 and Lily's father remarried Phoebe Ann or Phebrianna (records disagree - difficult writing!) and went on to have two more sons Levi John Davies b. 1891 and James Andrew Davies b. 1899.

Hi Gwyneth, I have responded to your email. We are definately distant cousins and I am very happy to share what I have with you. Looks like we can fill in some holes in our family trees. Margaret Parry (b1809) was a Jones of Llanstephen, Radnorshire. Her father was Thomas Jones b 1781 Boughrood, Radnorshire. She had two brothers that I know of: Thomas b1814 and Lewis b. 1824. John Parry (1805) Cliffordshire, Herefordshire and his father was Benjamin. That is as far as I've been able to get...I live in Canada so difficult to get to the source.

Hi , I am new to this list, & am trying to find out more about an ancestor of mine who apparently owned or was landlord of a pub called Darren, Dowlais. His surname was Hopkins, can anyone help me out . Was there a pub called the Darren? Cheers Amycakes.
