I think it's important to record our history. If google fetches it up, ok. If not we're d**ned!

The pictures of the button factory brought back memories of the Christmas parties. An uncle of mine worked at the factory. My sisters and I went to the parties. We came away with a good Christmas present. The pictures shown are of 1952, it would have been quite some years later that we went to the parties, thus suggesting that the factory was in production for many years.

I think the button factory was on the top end of the goatmill road near op chocolates.I remember it being derelict for many years before it was torn down, now there are new units there being built.
My nan worked there as well.I assume this factory made buttons ;D

Well done Taff, I hadn't considered that the factory made buttons. That's why all the houses in Merthyr had a biscuit tin full of buttons of all colours and sizes.

It's obviously and age old Merthyr Tradition ;D ;D

the button factory,of course they made buttons there.wooden ones ,plastic ones, all shapes and sizes. i used to help my Gran. sew the things onto cards. you were paid by the gross, the small ones were the quickest to do. the pay was pretty poor, for sure.

My Father in law David Davies, used to work in the Dispatch Dept. My Mother in law spent hours sewing the buttons on the cards and also pairing up knitting needles.

I worked in the office of the button factory when I was 16 years old, which was in 1973. It was owned by the Adler family, but when I was there the boss soundecas welsh as the rest of us, so I'm not sure of the Czec connection? I remember the "homeworkers" the ladies and gents who sewed buttons onto cards one of them was the well know charater of the time known as "teacher Bessie"...does anyone remember him I've moved away from Mertjyr now, but would love to hear from anyone email me on gyps1e1957@aol.com really LOVE looking at all the photos on this site well done both of you for compling it :-)

My father was a leading man at weish products in charge of production after leaving the navy (about 1945 to 1955). He used to take me to the factory on the weekend while he organised the next weeks production and sorted out any machinery problems. The buton factory also made wooden toys, so I had a great time playing with all the parts to make my own toys. Dad would often bring home a sackful of regect wood for the fire, there were enough pieces to make more toys at home, I remember especially football rattles which made a loud noise. They made the toys from scratch and the wooden parts were dyed with different colours. One winter dad brought home some small bags of dye which he sprinkled on the snow in the garden, it was the most colourful garden in Regent Street. Dad, Mum, my sister and me were invited to the factory owners house (Mr Adler) to watch the Queens Coronation on his TV.
