Hi, I've just had a breakthrough tryning to find out my Grandfathers past. Can anyone tell me if Penydarran and Dowlais are close to each other. Please excuse my ignorance, I'm from Essex hehehe. Although it seems all my anchestors seem to come from Merthyr. Also was it quite common for the Irish to emigrate there? thanks for any help.......... C

Hiya me again, finally got a birth certificate Francis Lamb my Grandfather (aka Frank) born 1894 at Beddoe's Court Dowlais son of Thomas (steelworks labourer) and Lizzie Davies. In the 1881 census (not that any of you were around then!!!) the family lived at 3 Back of Lewis Street. Family living there then were Francis Lamb age 40 (born in Kerry Ireland) (g.g. grandfather) Ellen Lamb age 30 (born in Kerry Ireland) John Lamb age 12 Thomas Lamb age 9 (my great grandfather) Francis Lamb age 5 Mary Ellen Lamb 1 month. My grandfather moved to Essex in the 1920's-1930's but I think the family stayed behind in Merthyr. Does it mean anything to you Ken??

Hi - I worked in the Hoover transport department during the 1960s and we had a driver there who lived in Dowlais whose name was Mervyn Lamb.

Carolyn, Dowlais and Penydarren are next to each other and a couple of miles north of Merthyr Tydfil itself. Many people emigrated to this area from Ireland, mainly from the Cork and Kerry counties. There is a strong representation of them in the local Catholic churches. Best of luck. I don't know any Lambs myself, sorry!
