I worked as an Hoover apprentice from 1972 untill 1976. Then worked in the transport department at Cyfarthfa. I left Merthyr in 1982 and now live in Johannesburg. My name is Dewi Davies and im looking to contact any of the apprentices from my years as an apprentice.

MESSAGE FOR SPRINGBOK Hi Dewi
Don't know what I did there, seems to have copied your message, I'm not the best at anything to do with computers. You will probably remember me, I had just finished my apprenticeship at Hoover's transport when you came there. I had the pleasure of 'looking after you' for much of the time. I must have made a deep impression because you seem to have gone off to Johannesburg and Robert Thompson cleared off to Canada. I didn't stay long either but didn't venture as far. I left the transport department for the Pentrebach factory to become a Quality Control Engineer, then in 1979, left for London. I am now back in Neath and, after 34 tears as a Civil Servant, took partial retirement two years ago. Hope you get this post and remember me, Dick Davies.

Well hello there DICK, I remember you very well indeed. You used to have a big bushy moustache,do u still have it? I remember u leaving to go work down Pentrebach. I remember vividly the various times going to the MOT station in Pontypool and stopping for a beer on the way back, and a trailer with several bags of potatoes in it.Remember that?Good times. Last i heard of you you where living in Dowlais. I left Hoover just before BRS took over and went to work in Merthyr Vale Colliery and left there to move to South Africs in 1982. Ive only just returned after 3 weeks in Merthyr(wed this week)as my mother is in hosp.
Regards Dewi.

Hi Dewi, nice to hear from you. Yes I still have the moustache but now a full beard as well. Yes I remember the trips out to Pontypool and the 'Spud Run'. Sorry to hear that your mother is in hospital, mine is too but is expected out in the next two weeks, she's been in there for about 8 weeks now. Brief update on what I have been up to. Moved to London in 1979, became a driving examiner in London in 1980, Transferred to Swansea in 1986,lived in Mumlbes then, became Test Centre Manager in 1987, Area Supervisor in 1994 (area was all of Wales). Got divorced not long after, and re-married. Went to University and got a degree. Learned to play saxophone and now play in a big band based at Pontypridd University. Have been living in Neath now for about 18 years. Please keep in touch, it's nice to hear from the people in your past. Take care Dick

Hi Dick, U have been busy. I also got divorced(SA not a good place for marriage-to many distractions shall we say). I returned to Merthyr with son in 94 where my son went to Cyfarthfa school and then went on to uni and completed a degree-hes now teaching in Saudi Arabia Tried settling back in Wales but just cant do it.Returned to SA in 2000 where ive been since. I dont know whats happened to Merthyr, its just not the place it was.Its still where my heart is though. Its very difficult when family members are ill and i live so far away but not much i can do about it unfortunately. Keep well Dewi
