Hello everyone,
I'm new to the site and would like some help if I may.
I'm researching my family history (Mother's family are all Merthyr, but alas I hail from further north... hence the username!). I have come across references to my family having lived in an area of Merthyr/Dowlais called Heolwermwd; sometimes spelt Heolwermod or Heol Wermood. Could any of you shed any light on where abouts in modern-day Merthyr this is? And if you are very familiar, would you know where Schoolroom Row was?
Yours in anticipation, Gog

Hello gog Heolwermood was one of the 4 OR 5 hamlets the district of MERTHYR TYDFIL and DOWLAIS was divided into .There was GARTH, HEOLWERMOD, GELLIDEG, FOREST, TAFF and CYNON. HEOLWERMMOD covered the area from DOWLAIS down to PENTREBACH on the eastern side of the river TAFF. This area was large covering all DOWLAIS, PENYDARREN ,MERTHYR TOWN, THOMASTOWN, CAEDRAW, roughly down to the PLYMOUTH IRON WORKS. In modern day terms it would be the same areas. As for the street SCHOOLROOM-ROW I think it was in the CEFN COED / VAYNOR area which was up until about 1973/4 part of BRECONSHIRE.

Thank you both very much.
It was indeed quite a large area - I was hoping for a street or two (heol, of course, being the Welsh word for road) but no such luck!
Do you know if any maps of Merthyr/Dowlais pre 1870 exist that show the street names? Old-maps.co.uk only go as far back as the 1870's
With thanks again, Gog
