Hi, I'm wondering if anyone knows where on Castle Street, which area of it, the Red Lion at number 15 would have been. There are some lovely old photos on this site of the street but I can't identify the actual building for lack of information. A relative, gt gt grand uncle Thomas Price, was the landlord there around 1890 both according to his death certificate in 1891 and Kelly's Directory 1895 though he was dead by then. He was a carpenter by trade and was from Llanfihangel Brynpabuan in Breconshire. His wife Catherine took over the pub by the 1891 census. I'm particularly interested in Thomas as he was so kind to his orphaned niece, my gt grandmother. His brother John ran a series of Merthyr pubs including the Cyfarthfa Arms on Brecon Rd, The Anchor at Pontmorlais and the Locomotive and Railway Inn in Lower High Street. John appears to be the landlord standing in front of "The Loco" in the photo on this site. Any information, especially about Thomas and The Red Lion, would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for reading this post.

Castle Street had a lot of pubs! However, the numbering system of Castle street was odd but The Red Lion was just up from the Lamb ( 19 ) and next to J. Thomas, Sports outfitters ...... long demolished and possibly where the tax office is now.
There were over 500 pubs in the now County Borough and very few even get included in any directories. The licenses giving details of who applied and held the license are legal documents and held by the Glamorgan Archives.

Thanks robertjones, That's a great suggestion. I'm a regular at the archives so will take a look as you suggest. So in the attached photo (couldn't find a way of linking to it) allowing for the Lamb to occupy 2 properties at 19 and 18 Castle Street, do you know if the closest property to the camera is the former Red Lion? Hello henfelinwynt According to the photo the shop is B. HARRIS-JONES womans clothes shop. In the electoral books B. HARRIS-JONES was located at number 17 Castle Street. On a street map of 1876 the Red LION is shown four buildings along from The LAMB Inn ,If the shop photo was two turned into one it would still be one out, the Lamb Inn was on the corner so was a large building but only one . I think you might be unlucky by one property sorry!. But i might be wrong.

Thanks very much for your help, Mike. No problem because the next building is one of a row of terraced houses shown in a photograph at the top of the Castle Street page. So though I can't get a clear picture I have a good idea what the Red Lion looked like. Gaynor
