My english girlfriend and I (american) will be staying in Merthyr for two nights at the travelodge. We like to go out at nights and hit up a few pubs. We're easy going and stay to ourselves for the most part, we just like a good place to have a few pints. Will we have problems? Suggestions on what to do/ what to see?
Thanks.

First of all head for the Social Security office and sign on a few quid in that, then off to the housing dept, bugger the travel lodge they will find you a room for a couple of nights, then sign up for a free bus pass, and enjoy your holiday in MT,then a nice drink in the 3 horse shoes on sat night. All jokes aside America, after dark MT is not a safe place to walk around, thugs can tell by your accent your a visitor, thus plenty of money,I would not walk the streets at night,if you want to have a drink call a cab there and back, what is your reason to visit MT? ?? Ken in OZ

So what's to do for an old Californian thinking about making a trip to MT. Places to stay, things to see, music, pubs. Any good fishing spots?

Well, Ken that's quite an outlook. From what part of MT do you hail from?

the problem with the media is that they seem to delight in branding certain areas as dangerous, unfriendly, etc I only live in Swansea, about an hour away by bus, and first impressions of Merthyr can be that it,s a bit run down, and in terms of the town centre, that might be true with lots of boarded up buildings, But the people are typically down to earth South Walians, sure there are drug related problems, but overall i find Merthyr o.k. When you venture outside the town, it,s extremely interesting . If you consider the history of the area, and are prepared to seek out what,s left of the industrial heritage, you can see Merthyr in a different light. It,s no different to any other South Wales town, they,re all suffering from the neglect of successive governments, but the people are generally the salt of the earth

Very well stated, I think. So if one wanted to rent a flat in and around the area is there a good publication online to view?
