This site is excellent! I'm a Londoner, but my mother came from Merthy. As a small boy, back in the early 1960's, we sometimes went there on holiday.
I have distant memories of the local shop which was at the top of the road called 'Gwaelodygarth' on the left hand side as you went up the hill. Was it run by a family called Jones? Also being taken into Cyfartha Park to play on the cannons outside of the school. Bottles of 'pop' were delivered by a Corona lorry!
Must go back again soon to take another look around

The Cambrian stores was run by the Jones family. One of the sons (Martin) was in my class in The County and Pen-y-Dre schools from 1969 to 1973.

I remember a Martin Jones in my class in Pen-Y-Dre. I left around 1972 to work as an apprentice in Hoovers. He lived on Gurnos Road I think. Haven't seen him since I was 17-18
