I was delighted to see my 1974 photos of Gwaunfarren House published (and acknowledged) on the Old Merthyr Tydfil website. I was born there in November 1944. My family migrated to Western Australia in March 1948 (I was 3½). I returned for a visit in 1974 and Gwaunfarren House was still there (that is when I took the photos). I understand Gwaunfarren House has long gone. Does anyone know when it was demolished and what is there now? Regards Harold

It was demolished in the mid-late eighties. The close thats there now has been used as a film set for Nuts & Bolts and Belonging.

I was born at Gwaunfarren house in 1945 I would appreciate a a chance to see a photo. I am now living in New Zealand where I have lived most of my life. My great Grandfather was an undertaker and builder in Merthyr (William James) My grandfather lived in Mary Street. Mrs Thomas in the Twyn stores I believe has held me as a baby as my mother knew her well.

The housing development that is built on the former site of the Gwaunfarren Maternity Hospital is called Gwaunfarren Grove, not Close.

My great-grandfather William Simons lived there in the 1860s-1870s. I have a couple of pieces of headed notepaper from there and also a few books marked "Simons Gwaunfarren."
What happened to the house in the 20th century? There is a family story that the house, which was rented or leased, was sold from under great-grandfather as revenge for his winning a legal case - I don't have any evidence to support this, however.

I, too ,was born in Gwaunfarren House(I assume hospital) in 1947. At the time I lived in Aberfan I never once visited the place. I never even bothered to find out its location, either. I gather from the above it no longer exists. When in Merthyr next I must visit Gwaunfarren Close. Can anyone please advise where the the Close is? Thanks. ;D
