I attended Pantglas Sec. School from 1958-1962. Anyone out there remember me? Name is Jeff Adams of Angus street. Looking back now I realise how unfair the 11+exam was: corruption(behind the scenes activity). Lack of resources: two thirds of allocated money went to Grammer schools. In general, the Sec. schools were NEGLECTED. Recent research has revealed that those pupils in the 'A' stream at Sec. school(included me!) did far better academically than those pupils in the 'B' stream at Grammer school! Yet NOTHING was done about it! They must have known at the time-surely? Having said that I did enjoy my stay there. I remember Mr. Jeff Davies-very liberal with his cane! A Mr. Shaw-used to love his stories. Mr. Watkins taught Social Studies. He had problems with the idiots in the classroom who simply did not want to learn, plus he was a newly arrived teacher from T.T. college. A Miss Evans I recall who would cane naughty boys but never any girls! Headmaster was Mr. Glyn Davies(heavily nicotened hands!); a likeable chap. I also remember 'Slogar' Williams , a headmaster and a J.P. Nice chap too-always chewing gum even at assembly! Would exhort us not to eat sweets in school! I remember a Miss Evans (or was it Davies?)who advised us never to hold back a fart, it was better for one to release it!So many did. That's the sum total I remember about her class! She used to summon forth naughty boys to the front of the class to be punished via her wooden ruler. All the 'victim' had to do(we soon caught on to this) was cry. Then she would burst into tears and stop the caning. Some school I tell you. Some teachers! I remember a Mr. Philips. Not sure if he taught in the primary school or Sec. Modern. He was an ex -spitfire pilot. I never liked him much,he was too fond of the cane. I suspect he enjoyed inflicting pain perhaps due to my hair colour(auburn) he mistook me for a German! But, to be fair to him he did stop pupils from laughing when I used to stutter during reading lessons. Also remember a Mr Doug .Pearson-ugh. Never thought much of him either. Used to shout too much, esp. if you made a mistake. Fellow pupils names I remember: David Roberts, Alan Bennett, Terry Lovis(always combing his hair back!),Peter Walker, Alan Loyd, Mary James(became a copper?), June Morgan Jill-? etc. That's it, folks!!!!
