There has been a picture posted in "Whatsnew" of the Salvation Army Band that we believe was taken in Troedyrhiw. Robert H. Weale led the mission band for the Church which won many contests. Does any one know any of the other members or have any information about the band.

I keep returning to this page with interest for comments about the Salvation Army. Many of my relatives were members and I would be delighted to see any information about it. Robert

Relatives say that Robert Weale built a house (large house for the times) at #35 Wyndham Street, called the Wyndham House. This house was apparently next door to the Salvation Army Chapel.

There has been a lot of viewings of this subject but very few comments or replies. I would be very interested in knowing what your interests or knowledge of the Salvation Army are. Bob.

I believe that the Salvation Army used to meet in the old Bethel Chapel in Wyndham Street, Troedyrhiw.
The chapel is still there but is derelict.

The Salvation Army, after being unused for a while, was turned into a chapel in, I think, the late 1960s or early 70s. It was called Ynysgau Full Gospel, Free Mission. The work was carried out by Morgan Broom, of Twynyrodyn, Merthyr, who became a Rev after studying at Swansea. He was also the minister at Ynysgau, which was just one fairly large room, really. Mr Broom at the time also worked as an insurance agent. Before that, he worked on the railways. He later took over churches in Rhymney and Sirhowy and eventually Ivor Church at Dowlais. He died last year. At the funeral held at St Tydfil's Church, Peter Stead, a well-known historian and TV personality in Wales, spoke. I believe Morgan was his uncle. The Salvation Army building is, in fact, still being used - as a small furniture upholstery firm although there is no sign etc at the building which looks very run-down!
