I wondered if anyone could give me any information about this Public House. My Great Grandfather was born in this Pub in 1884.

Thanks for that Alan. Can I be a pain and ask is anyone knows roughly where in present day Dowlais the pub was. I hope to visit this summer and would like to see the area. Finally is there any publications or books that have pictures of Old Dowlias that I could purchase?

I lived in Lewis Street until about 1960, I recall that the Goerge was at the far end of the road on the right hand side.I believe the bar was to the right of the main door and the lounge (smoking room) was to the left. I recall the outside was painted cream on top and brown on the bottom. Running along its side was a "gulley" which went down to Ivor Street, opposite on the other side of the "gulley" was a very large black corrigated iron garage. To the left of the garage was the embankment on which Dowlais Central railway station was built. Its approx position would have been about 250 yds north of the Con Club,on the present road towards Pant, Hope this is of some help to you.

Thanks for that information it all helps build up a mental picture of the area that was home to this very secretive man. John Young Left Dowlais when he was 16/17 we believe, he is on the 1901 census Living at Number 8 Lewis Street. By 1908 he was married to my Great Grandmother and living in Kent. He Served in the first world war using the Surname Doolan which I have come to find out was his Step-Father's name. He did serve with two welsh regiments however My Mother never remembers him talking of or visiting Wales. So I am on a mission to find out all I can about him, his family and Where he came from.
