Our family has always been led to understand that Thomas Jenkins born 1871 (son of Thomastown Brickworks owner) went to Merthyr Grammar School. I see that the County School started in 1896. Thomas would have been too old. If Thomas did attend Merthyr Grammar, where would it have been? Where else might he have been schooled in Merthyr if born in 1871?

Schools certainly were not lacking in Merthyr at that period but they were mainly for younger children.I notice that there was a 'Merthyr Tydfil Propriety School' housed in Penydarren House between 1876 and 1888. In 1879 it had 80 day scholars and 19 boarders but I don't have their age. There were 26 private 'Dame Schools' towards the end of the century and Taliesin williams, the son of Iolo Williams, had a very famous private school. However in 1884 two advanced elementary schools were opened, one in Dowlais Central School and another in Caedraw. These were higher grade schools and their main purpose was to provide additional education for pupils who wanted to become teachers.
