I went to Gellifaelog Juniors back in the sixties, I only lived in Regent Street so it wasn't too far to go. I was in Miss King's class, and recall a boy called Robert Cushion, I believe was also Peggy's son. Phillip Joll was there as well, I think his father was a policeman. Phillip is now is an opera singer. His best mate was a Robert O Driscoll. I think they lived in Penydarren. My friend was Marilyn Mitchell, from Galon Uchaf. Mr Beynon's brother did die at Aberfan. What memories you are bringing back. Keep it uo lads!

I went to Gellifaelog infant and junior schools between 1954-1962. My teacher was Letitia Morgan -she was lovely - and I remember Miss King. I think Miss King got married, maybe to one of the other teachers while I was there or just after I left. Letitia Morgan was also my Sunday school teacher at Gwernllwyn Chapel. Happy, happy days

Hi, harrylime, I remember Phillip Joll. His older brother Robert Joll was in my class. You're right in thinking their father was a policeman and we had a teacher called Mr Beynon for my last year, probably 1962. My mother told me that he was killed at Aberfan.

I was born in 10 Dyke Street in Merthyr in 1932. My father was on the GWR. In 1936 we moved to 57 Garden City and when I was five I started at Gellifailog School. The headmaster lived next door to us and his son was killed in the tragedy at Aberfan.
I don't remember much about Gellifailog as when the war started my father was moved to Oxfordshire with the GWR and I was 7 years old when we moved.
My friends in Garden City were Brian Duke, who I know passed away a few years ago; the Tong brothers and Brian Gittelshon.
I was in Merthyr last Thursday, May 15th after attending my cousin's funeral and visited Cyfartha Castle and park. My father went to the Castle School in 1913.
Happy days.
Lionel

I attended Gelli seniors up untill the day it merged with Penydre in the early 70s,if my memory correct wasnt Mr Beynon the headmaster at that time, great teachers,Mr Jenkins (bulldog) was a great english teacher.Arwel Davies, who taught history after MR Pendry left was also a very good teacher(i met up with him many years later in the old Merthyr rugby club and we had a good laugh over a few beers, great guy.Art teacher was Mr Barnes who owned a sport a sports shop in Merthyr. Brings back great memories of a school with a bad reputation that was never deserved.

I lived in 57 Garden City and our neighbours were the Bynons. The son was a teacher and was killed when the coal slurry engulfed the school at Aberfan. I left Merthyr in 1940 as my father was with the GWR and moved to Banbury. Dad went to the Cyfartha Castle School. At the beginning of WWII the lake at Cyfartha was drained and with Brian Duke my school friend we walked across the hardened mud of the lake. All ok till Brian slipped and pushed me in to the mud which quickly rose to our waists. Hearing our cries a young man came to our rescue and pulled us both out. I lost my new best shoes. We both walked home caked in mud and a bath (clothes and all). Happy days!
