My great great grandfather was an iron moulder according to his marriage certificate.(1857). On the cert it says he was in the "Dou" works,or it could be Doo,or Dow. He was married in Newport though he was born in Abergavenny, and was there for at least two censuses, latterly with his wife and family. Is it possible or likely that this works is,in fact, the Dowlais Ironworks? The geography looks possible from a C21st point of view, but was this possible in the 1850's?

Have you looked on the Census returns for the year after they were married (1861) - it might give you a clue if your ancestor was still working at the same place.
If you can't do that, send me his name and any other details and I'll look it up for you. Sincerely, Rachel Bowen

An iron moulder was a well paid, skilled, good job in the ironworks, but sadly there are no employment records taken at the time ..... only salaried workers were recorded ..... Dowlais doing very well in the 1850s.
