I am researching Wales Schoolboy International football from 1907 to the present day. I would like to hear from anyone who can give me names and schools of some of the many players from Merthyr and the surrounding area who have played for the international side at Under 15 and 18 level. Dates of birth would be handy too. Players from pre-1939 include: A.R.Baker (1925), W.Colvin (1927), ?.Halley (1923), A.Jenkins (1916), C.Jones (1915), E.Jones (1915), A.Morgan (1914), J.Murphy (1923), E.Rowlands (1921), W.S or S.D.Scott (1914 & 15), W.J.Sullivan (1915), T.D.Taverner (1924), D.J.Thomas (1934), C.H.Trailor (1933), R.Williams (1914), R.J.Williams (1925), T.H.T.Williams (1935). Some of the initials may not be correct! Thanks for your help!

One name that immediately comes to mind is Clive Lloyd. I know he was capped for Wales but not sure of the year. Probably mid sixties at a guess. Played for Norwich/Cheltenham/Hereford and Merthyr. Think he went to Gellifaelog school and still lives in Urban Street, Penydarren. His younger brother Derek was also a good Footballer, but I'm not sure if he ever made any of the National sides.

More recent but still some time ago is Gordon Davies, I played alongside him for Merthyr schools during the late 60's. Gordon went on to play professionally at Fulham, Manchester City and Wrexham as well as gaining full caps for Wales. Last heard of managing a side in Norway I think.

Just remembered Mark Pembridge his family lived in the Gurnos, not sure if Mark did but I remember Pembridges living in my close. Pine Close. He went through the system and had many full caps for Wales.

Gordon Davies was my teacher at Gwernllwyn School in Dowlais in 1975/76 where he teached while he was playing for Merthyr Town he then left and went to play professionaly for Fulham. I also know Derek Showers who currently lives near Brecon Road both great footballers.

I can remember Frankie Collins playing for Wales Schoolboys in Ninian Park in 1954, he became to be known as Frank the Tank due to his power in Merthyr's Southern League side

Hi -I remember Derek Showers well he lived in White Street, about half way down on the right hand side. As a young lad he was always kicking a ball around the street, about 2 years younger than me, went on to play for Cardiff.. I also remember Gordon Davies, he lived in the 'three streets area' Dane Street, Stewart Street' he went on to play for Fulham, probably 3 or 4 years younger than me. Gordon's aunt lived next door to me in Glendower Street. My lasting memory of Gordon was that he ran into our house and picked up a tray, on which there was a large jig - saw that had taken me days to complete. It ended up on the floor in bits again.
