Hi does anyone know anything about the link between the iron works in Brendon Hill Somerset with Ebbw Vale.I have found that my gg grandfather worked in Brendon Hill but then moved to Ebbw Vale.I am wondering if he moved here because of working in the Iron mines.Any info would be welcome.Allison

there were iron workings in the Brendon hills , and in 1853 the partners of the Ebbw Vale ironworks formed the Brendon Hills IronOre Company A special railway was constructed to transport the ore to the port of WATCHET. This naturally involved inclined plane working. The mines closed in 1879. There was a re-opening by a different company in 1907, but this lasted only a few years. When the Ebbw Vale company left, they took some of the railway rolling stock from Watchet to Ebbw Vale. For a fuller explanation ,it,s worth seeking out THE WEST SOMERSET MINERAL RAILWAY, published by David and Charles The reason why they originally ceased mining the ore, was because of a general recession in the industry, and competition from Spanish ore

further to my last post, i,ve checked on Amazon, and you can get an excellent publication about the mineral line, THE OLD MINERAL LINE ...by R.J.SELLICK, isbn no.....0-900131-39-x it,s not expensive and is the book i got my information from, mike, swansea

Hi. I have heard that they worked on steel . I have no idea about iron. Better go for Google search.
