i was doing a bit of walking around PANTYSCALLOG piecing together in my mind the railway system, when a chap who i was talking to mentioned the reservoir had been drained. I didn,t realise it still existed so i had a look at it. What is the history of the reservoir, and what is the maximum depth? There doesn,t seem to be much of a feed to the reservoir. There are two cars in there, and one appeared to have had it,s roof cut off as in Fire Service rescues, which seemed a bit strange

I always assumed it was for the Ivor works but I can't claim to know for sure.
Max depth is the height of the artificial embankment at the south west corner, because the bed of the pond follows the original line of the hillside, they just built the embankment and flooded it. I'm guessing about 10 metres?

Great photos of the top pond... I used to live at Blaen Dowlais in the 70's/80's. I reckon that car will end up as a taxi in Merthyr!! ;D

I was up walking round this area a week or so ago.The pond now looks about half full, but there is still a lot of diggers and workmen about. From what i can gather they are making the pond accessible for wheel chairs etc. There were no cars when i was up there but i assume they were taken away as i see the original thread was started last year!
The state of that area in general around the pond, culverts and the old railway line is a disgrace.Dumped rubbish, trollies, cans etc, really is shocking.
I also noticed there is a lot of work going on near the "cwm",there are diggers there as well, anyone know what is being done there?
