Does anyone have an affinity with Cyfarthfa Castle? Perhaps they went to school there or were married there? I was married in the Gallery room two years ago and I cannot imagine a more suitable venue. I've produced a small line of distinct images of Cyfarthfa Castle, and would greatly appreciate any comments! www.shepherdimages.co.ukOur children are in school there also...

My father, Cadifor Evans from Dowlais, attended Cyfartha for about 5 years from 1917, before becoming a pupil teacher and then going to Trinity College to train as a teacher. He qualified in 1926, but there were no jobs in the area at that time and after a period of unemployment he was thankful to get a job in Hull, where I was born and brought up. His older brother Tudor married Maud and they had two children, Marlene (O'Hanlon) and Derek. Older sister Jennie married Stanley Rees and their children were Ieuan, Dilys and Avril. These cousins will all be in their 70s or 80s now. My aunt and uncle continued to live in Dowlais until their deaths I have been able to do quite a bit of research on my father's ancestors but have not been able to trace my cousins, who in the 1970s were living in the valleys, or their children. I would be most grateful if anyone can help.

As a boy I remember visiting the castle when fetes were held there, etc. Later I accidently visited its museum, altho' it had a rather dull setout(compared to museum's these days) when I reached the section on the Romans I ;D was HOOKED!! Ever since I read anything I can on them.

I think that my Father, Henry George Humphrys went to this school. He was born in 1906 so would this have been possible. Can anyone help with the location of archives for the Dowlais area. Would they be at Cardiff?

I've always had an "affinity" for Cyfarthfa Castle - visited fetes (was a steward at the Cefn gate for one!), a circus on at least one occasion. I loved just walking around the beautiful park with my father - what a great place. It amazed me (and still does) that such a gem could be found in an industrial town like Merthyr. The old museum always smelled a bit musty, but I loved that too - does anyone remember the "typical Welsh kitchen"?
Merthyr has a LOT of history - in the early 19th century it's name was known worlwide. I'm proud to have been born in the Borough.

Reply to Brian Humphreys so
Type Old Merthyr Tydfil into Google, and go to the schools page and select Cyfarthfa Castle - there are a lot of photographs and other information.

Fond memories of the Castle. I lived on Park Row Gardens, alongside the park and the whole area was my stomping ground. I also spent the first two years of high school at the Castle(82-84...If my memory serves me right, (the years, not the fact I went there.lol)).

Hi dshepherd I attended Cyfarthfa Castle Grammar School from 1963 to 68. Had some really good times there. Used to have the tuck shop on the main car park area. Had some good friends there over those years

Aye, I went there from 61 to not sure exact date ...I remember standing against the wallbars in the back of the new gym when the then head, Harvard Walters, after announcing all the form rooms for the current years pupils, looked up from his notes to any empty gym and saw the three of us -
"What? you three back again?" "Do whatever you like" ..I only lasted about three months after that. Good times though!

Re Havard Walters, I was in one of his Welsh language classes and although I can't say I did well, I have a great respect for him and regret I didn't do justice to his tuition. I was at 'the Castle' in the 1950's and took part in the production of the 'Pirates of Penzance' by Mr Davies and in his Choir for the Summer concerts. My musical interests were helped by joining the Madrigal group of Miss Lewis, and I greatly admired the talent of Mr Lawrence the Music Master who retired in the 1950's.
