Hi! I've posted previously about one side of my family but I am now wondering if anyone has any information about another side of my family. The Boultons were horse slaughterers in Merthyr - based right at the top of Twynyrodyn. The Boultons became the Protheroes. I'd love to know if anyone has any photos of the Boultons farm or indeed any photographs of the Boulton/Protheroe family. Any information about them would also be greatly appreciated!! Thank you

Hello, I have just joined this site because I am also looking for information about the Boultons.
Cassina Boulton was my grandmothers cousin and I used to visit her with my Nan when I was little. I have found a record which states Cassina married a Williams and had a little girl called Olwen Cassina Williams. They lived in a pub called Pleasant View Inn, Heolgerrig.
Cassina died tragically in a fire. There are two stalls in Merthyr Market owned by the Protheroes. If I find anything more about them I will let you know.

I have recently found evidence that Cassina Boulton (sometime called Catherine) had an illegitimate child who was 'adopted' by my relatives who lived near Newmarket. Can give more info to her family .

James Boulton (1861 - 1909) , horse slaughter, appears in the 1901 census return for Merthyr Tydfil. He married Mary Jane Jones in 1896 - not a happy marriage - she separated from him and disputed his will. See Merthyr Express 12 - 3 - 1910. My interest is Mary Jane. James seems to have been a rotter. He had several brushes with the police over cruelty to horses. Look up Old Welsh Newspapers in Google and search for 'Boulton' .

Ah. I don’t think my first post came up. I am Reg Boulton s granddaughter. My father was Reginald James Boulton. Only child. A friend found this site after I was telling her if the coincidence of meeting someone who keeps her ponies in the field above the old slaughter house. I may not be able to offer much information but Gladys and Julia certainly can. Please let me know how to contact you. Carla

Hi Carla - my name’s Kelly, I started this post back in 2008! Totally forgot my login details so have started afresh haha! I am descended from the Boulton of Twynyrodyn - last night I discovered that I have a great great Aunt that I never knew about! Her name was Blodwen Boulton - and when her father, James Boulton, died, his wealth was left to the children from his first marriage (my great great grandfather James Boulton and his siblings) and Blodwen and her mother received nothing. Would be interested to hear what you know!

Hi Kelly,
Blodwen's mother was Mary Jane Boulton. She was the second wife of James. She was the daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth Jones and was born in 1866 in parish of Vaynor. There is a good press report (look up 'Old Welsh Newspapers') of the court case that Blodwen brought against her step-sister on 25th June 1910. You can also look up the census records for Mary Jane - but she used the name 'Bolton' - for 1901 and 1911.
I have put a lot of the detail on a web site 'https://sites.google.com/view/morgdavtree2/home' You will need to scan through this until you find a link to 'The Carmarthen Connection'. Buried in there is a lot of what I have found on the Boultons.

I note that on this thread mentions that there are two stalls in merthyr market of the Protheroes. Liz Allan on Facebook is related to the Protheroes of the market. Liz is my Facebook friend. We know one another way back in the 80s when I and she worked in the old Merthyr market and Liz parents before her were business people in the old Merthyr market. I don't know if Liz or her brothers are members of the old merthyr Tydfil forum but you can certainly find Liz on Facebook. Hope this info is of help.
