I knew quite a number of the characters named in these posts and it’s brought back many fond memories. I’ve just read Mario Barsini’s “Real Merthyr” and he describes his encounters, the loudness, and the overpowering odour of Lilli Dap.
I was acquainted with Lilli both from Graig Terrace, Dowlais and from Galon Uchaf but I had never heard of her being referred to as Lilli Dap, although she always wore daps. In Dowlais she was know as Lilli Trailer, probably due to her shorter trailing leg. In Galon Uchaf she was always nicknamed Lilli Full Pelt, a character equal to any listed in these posts. Thanks for the memories.

I recall too a child with a shorter leg than the other. Was she Lilli Trailer spoken of in another post on this site? John Rogers Canberra, Australia

Hi - I was born and brought up in Dowlais and remember many characters. The Leslie brothers, one was taller with wavy hair and the shorter one had brylceamed back straight hair. They would usually stand in doorways I remeber them regularly being in the doorway of a dis-used shop opposite the junction on North Street and Lloyd Street. They were harmless and nervous kids used to tease them by making dog bark noises which frightened them. I remember Mr Barlow who was a very short man, a chimney sweep, he always had an alsation dog with him and was a regular patient at Dr Dey's. I remember as I was born and lived my first 6 years at Llwynwern (Dr Dey's house/surgery). When I was at Castle School Reggie Spit was a familiar face around the park and school. He was always immaculately dressed, if a little old fashioned, with hair well greased back and round glasses. he would often have circus programmes which he had obviously drawn himself, extremely well. I remember Teacher Bessie, who lived at Balaclava Road at that time, 50's/60's. He used to walk around wearing make up and a hairnet. Teacher Bessie was however a very strong man of muscular physical build and a very competent striker in the blacksmiths shop at the Ivor Works. I also remember other character like Sid and Id, Dennis Law (a nickname) and the colonel who used to machine gun passers by from the raised walkway at Pontmorlais using his walking stick as the weapon. ll harmless and contributing to colourful life at the time. Regretably they were often the targets for 'leg pulling' from kids, fortunately it was almost without exception harmless. These poor souls would have probably enjoyed a far better quality of life in current times with better social help and medication. I have not lived in Merthyr for 33 years but am still a Dowlais boy to the end. I remember Dowlais having a wide and varied range of shops, many better than in Merthyr Town at the time. It is sad to see the deterioration that modernisation brought to Dowlais in the late 60's and 70's. I am still proud of my upbringing in a town with so much history surrounded by some of the most beautiful countryside in the UK.
