Hi I have just joined the site and thought I would leave a message. I lived in 15 Horse St with my parents Bryn (who worked for Home and Colonial, the Pearl and Sterlings Frozen Foods) and Peggy Lewis(who used to work for Lipton before getting married and having the Family) ,with my 3 brothers and 1 sister, who are in age order Philip, Peter, Elizabeth and Christopher. We all attended and were members of St John's Church choir as well as my Uncle Arthur Jenkins (dec'd). We moved from Dowlais in 1961 to Cardiff . If you would like to have a chat please e- mail me. Thanks

This may be before your records, but my G-G Grandfather lived at #3 Horse Street. His name was Peter Horan. His wife was Margaret, but I do not have her last name. I believe they were married in Ireland before they came to Dowlais. My G-Grandfather Maurice(Morris) Peter Horan emigrated to Pennsylvania in 1891. Peter died in Dowlais around 1910. I would love to have any information on Horse Street and any photos if you have them.

I believe my family lived at 1 Horse Street from early in the 20th Century until the mid 1950's.
My grandfather was Daniel Howells but as an alcoholic, he was often absent. My grandmother, Keturah held the family together as best she could.
The children who lived there at one time or another would have included my father, David Baden, known as Baden, his elder brother William Noel (known as Noel), his two sisters Amelia (Millie) and Lila and possibly their younger bother Danny.
Apart from a cousin, Valentine who is the son of Noel, I have lost all contact with the family and would very much like to get in touch. I have nothing to offer and seek nothing but information.

Hi, i've just come accross this site via another. My mother was evacuated to Horse Street in the early 40's.The lady she lived with was a Mrs Cassie Lee who was married to a chinese gentleman and had children Myra and Reggie.I believe Reggie Lee wrote a book about the area .My mother learned to eat with chopsticks at the age of five!.
Many years later (early 70's)I joined the WRAF and was friendly with a girl from M/T,her name was Lorraine-Taffy-Morgan.I visited Taf's home once when we were on leave and was completely unaware that it was the same street that my mother had been evacuated to all those years ago--yes Horse Street!.I would have loved to have met Mrs Lee and heard her memories of my mother and gran.
All I remember of my one brief visit is -lots of hills.lol--going to the local pub which I seem to remember had palm tree wallpaper(or tropical design)?,last but not least the masses of food Taf's mother laid on for our tea--plates of roast beef and ham and home made cakes.Happy days.

Hi Marysma, I am Cassie Lee's granddaughter,my father was Reggie Lee and ,yes, he did write a book called 'The town that died'. Gran brought me up while my parents moved to settle in London. She lived with Myra, my aunt and my two cousins Tony and Meurig who now live in Merthyr. I remember her talking about the evacuees of whom your mother was one, pity I was too young to recall what she said. I have so many happy memories of living with my Gran. I have been back to Dowlais but Horse Street has completely disappeared to make room for a new housing estate, my Grans house was the last to be demolished , she held out to the bitter end and it was only when she died were they able to build there. My mother is still alive at 92 so I will ask her if she remembers anything as she and my father lived in Horse Street. Thanks to everyone for keeping Horse Street and memories alive.

Hi lyndalee,
lovely to hear from you.
I remember your dad Reggie calling to see my nan(Gwen Morgan)and giving her a signed copy of his book which I think my mum still has.
My mother also has a photograph of her and Myra and a dog who I think was named Trixie(mum hated the dog with a vengence ;D.
My g,gran was Florrie Thomas from Mackintosh Place,Roath and she was a friend of Cassie's---and that was how my mother ended up living in Horse St for a while.
Although I read your fathers book in the 70's when he gave it to my nan,I think it needs reading again---I'll ask mum if she still has it.
Thanks for posting, Marysma

Hi Lynda and marysma. I'm Tony, Cousin to Lynda (hi Lynda XX) and Grandson to Cassie. It was lovely to see your post on here about Nan. I too remember Nans stories of her "little evacuees" she loved them. Have you seen Nans picture on the picture site of this forum, www.alangeorge.co.uk/index.htm She's on 'Dowlais Town' Page 2, about half way down the page, If you haven't seen the site before, you'll have some great memories of the old days in Dowlais. Lots of love and best wishes, to You and David, Aunty Lilian and Bobby and all your Family. xxx Tony.

Hi there,
I am not sure if anyone can help...i am trying to search for some information about my grandfather, Mr. David John Jenkins and my search has led me to Horse Street, Dowlais.
I actually have very little information about him. All i really know is that he would have been born about 1919, his fathers name was George Thomas Jenkins and he is from Merthyr Tydfil.
My grandmother, Gladys Edna Jenkins, has recently recalled that she used to visit Horse Street with my grandfather to visit his sister (unfortunately i do not have her name), this would probably of been sometime in the 1950's.
I do not know if any of these names ring a bell but if any of this makes sense to you, please drop me a mail back as i would really like to acquire as much information as i can.
Thanks so much, Kirsty

Hi Tony. Great to hear from you. Yes I have seen Grans picture. There's a message from Kirsty regarding her grandfather named Jenkins. As gran married again to a chap named Jenkins could this be her granddad? They moved out of Horse Street for a while but came back. He used to smoke a pipe and taught me how to count in Spanish. Do you remember him? I'm sure I've seen a photograph of their wedding, we were very small, about 7yrs old. I'll try and fish it out it might help Kirsty identify him. Hope all is well with you.

Hi Kirsty, read above message, we'll see if we can come up with something, it might be George but don't hold your breath, things get confused when you're young. He would be your great grandfather anyway.
