Does this Inn still exist and if so is there a photograph? Ann Allcock was registered in the 1901 census as being innkeeper here and 2 of her children were with her. She was previously at 110/112 Hill Street Rhymney. Are they near each other? Thanks for reading this. Jean Thomas

Hi Jean, Oldmerthyrtydfil.com doesn't have a photograph of this pub, on our list of of Public Houses (by Tom Heir), it says it was on Pontsticill Road. www.alangeorge.co.uk/publichouses.htmAlan

Hi, This is the little white building next to the Red Cow Inn (which is where my ancestors the Greatrex's lived for a good while, and my grandma lived as a child). It is named 'Pany-Y-Dwr' - here is a link to it on google maps, cut and paste. www.google.com/maps/@51.793451,-3.368043,3a,75y,276.93h,82.81t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1sidv6Z5_ZdpIpKC3L3Gs4yg!2e0 If you zoom in on the brick wall you can read the name. I have worked out that it is this building as it is in the correct sequence on all the 1891, 1901 and 1911 census records in comparison to the Red Cow and other buildings, plus there is a reference to Pany Y Dwr being an inn at the following website : wbo.llgc.org.uk/en/s-RHYS-HYW-1715.htmlKind regards Alison (researching anything to do with Pontsticill and Vaynor 1880's - 1930), surnames Greatrex, Richardson and Eva

I don't know if this helps, but here's a picture of The Red Cow Inn I took in 2011. You can see I presume the little white building you are talking about (just) . In picture number 2 you can see another shot of the Inn, the window behind the barrels to the right of the building was once a door, and was the door to the residence of my Great Uncle, Thomas Lloyd .

The building was also the shop, in the 70's. Owned by my parents, previous owner , john the shop who moved to a house near the brecon mountain railway line. Before that I think there was an English middle aged couple, possibly Rodgers.

Oh dear, I've only just read these - lizzie4929, the book you are talking about is the one my mum wrote all about my gran's life at the Red Cow and Thomas Greatrex her father. The Greatrex Family by Eileen Greatorex. They should still have the copy in the Red Cow that she gave them too - we also gave them all the greatrex family photos of those who lived there at the time and they are up on the wall in the upstairs room that my Gran used to refer to as the Long Room when it was her home in the 1900's! We were so pleased :-)
mikemerthry - that is my Great Grandad's brother William Greatrex - the report was however wrong, he didn't die. He was injured - can you imagine his poor mother receiving that news, then to find he was still alive. There were further newspaper reports locally confirming he was just injured! He eventually died of black fever working on the railways at sekondi gold coast! I have a photo of him in full uniform that I gave to the Pembroke history society, I think they now have it on their website. My Great Grandfather Thomas Greatrex who ran the Red Cow after their mother Mary Greatrex died, was also on the council or something similar, and he was also champion quoits and played for Wales! There are quite a few paper reports of all the above that I've found.
Re PanyYDwr, I've just found a site saying that the Red Cow used to be called that, however, on the 1891 census my G G Grandparents Sam and Mary Greatrex were listed as living at the Red Cow and then the next dwelling is the Ponsticill Inn. no mention of Pant Y Daw. On Sam's death certificate it shows his place of death was Pany Y Daw and not The Red Cow - which conflicts a bit. I'd love to get to the bottom of this!

There is a death notice/obit for an EDWARD GREATOREX aged 7 son of Mr T.B GREATOREX of the RED COW PONTSICILL on page 3 of the MERTHYR EXPRESS newspaper 18th of November 1916 edition. I can't remember how big a notice it was but hope this is helpful!

Hi - yes we've seen that one thank you for letting me know, someone showed it us a while ago when they showed us the one about William dying too. He was William though, not Edward and they called him Billy - I read an article in the same newspaper I think giving a report on the funeral and how the school children all sang - so sad! We have a photo of him, lovely little boy. He's buried at Vaynor with his Mum Lily. Alison

Hi Mike, Thanks for looking that up - that will be relating to the funeral of Lily Greatorex wife of Tom who died 10th August I think from memory, and mother of little Billy who died in 1916. She died in childbirth, she is my great grandma. I think I have that newspaper cutting. Tom carried on looking after the Red Cow, he re-married to Norah Lewis, all the children of Tom and Lily eventually moved out to Birmingham (where I am) and Yorkshire. Do you know how I can go about finding out about the history of the Red Cow and the house Pant Y Dwr which is next door to the Red Cow? I am wondering if the house was originally the Pontsticill Inn, and whether the Red Cow was originally called Pant Y Dwr and the house next door adopted the name? Sam Greatorex lived at the Red Cow (Tom's father) and died in 1899. His place of death is Pant Y Dwr - we are wondering was that the Red Cow, or was he next door for some reason. It wasn't the cottage that adjoined the pub, we know that. My Aunt, Olive Richardson nee Greatorex lived in the cottage at the side for several years after she married, before moving to Birmingham around 1928 ish. Thanks again for looking that up. Alison

I have a map showing exactly where the Pontsticill Inn was, but it's too big to attach to this posting. Opposite The Red Cow is a hill with bad bend leading down to a humped back bridge near the Waterworks. Below the old chapel (Chapel Cottage) and a newer house (The Pines), but before you get to the bend, is an older property called Penrheol House, which used to be The Pontsticill Inn. The Red Cow and Pant Y Dwr presently have the same owner ....

Hi, thank you for posting about the old map Are you able to email it to me at all, would you mind - you can get me at greatrex@allybongo.co.uk ? I have so many loose ends for Ponsticill, this being one of them! We haven't visited the Red Cow or Vaynor for a couple of years, we should be going back again in May next year. Thank you
